Been trying out Zoner AV for Android and finding it effective, with a very light footprint. It has a fairly quick scan of the system, and scan on mount - but they need to include the SD card |

Consumer Reports rates the top-rated free mobile ones as Avast and AVG in that order. Avast was #2 compared to the paid version of McAfee. Otherwise, all paid versions perform better than free versions.
Since Zoner was mentioned, it was the worst of the bunch. quote: While it was very good at locating a lost or stolen phone, it did a poor job wiping and locking phones. It was only fair at finding malware.

| Android devices work under a sandbox. Of course this won't prevent "human error", as no OS is completely immune...
--- but resources matter most to me, therefore it's my preference. There's no one better to judge than the person that uses the app of their choice
I will toss out that paid vs free apps have long ago been discounted. There are free apps as good or better than paid versions and vice versa.....
The only variable is the user -- ~Safe Hex~ Team Discovery ~ Project Hope ~ Like A Hurricane~ |

| Zoner did very well in their tests on resource usage but below average in other other catagory but ease of use.
Yes, there were some free apps that performed better than some paid ones, and I mentioned them, but, overall, paid versions performed better. |

The only variable is the user This. Personally I don't run any such security packages on my phone nor do I even run any on my mothers own phone. Because I know she isn't going to get into nefarious apps by choice and neither will I. And that is really what these security apps boil down to on Android devices is making sure downloaded apps aren't getting access to more than they should be. If you don't go installing every app under the sun and vet what you do install, there should be zero cause for concern.
And of course it also means that extra bit of resources available for my own use especially on resource constricted phones. -- I swear, some people should have pace-makers installed to free up the resources. Breathing and heart beat taxes their whole system, all of their brain cells wasted on life support.-two bit brains, and the second bit is wasted on parity! ~head_spaz |

Why the hell would anyone use an av on android? That'd ridiculous.
Just don't download apps from outside play store and you'll be fine. -- I found the key to success but somebody changed the lock. |

Try the Amazon Appstore, Mobo Market, Slide Me, Get Jar, etc.
Never had a problem with their apps and no malware detected. |

You can get any (paid) app by searching for name + apk and downloading it from websites. But it will contain malware. -- I found the key to success but somebody changed the lock. |

Some perfectly good Apps Play and to a lesser degree Amazon just will not allow, often because of copyright issues they want to stay out of. --

Play and Amazon are full of questionable and potentially malicious software especially the free stuff. And there are lots of good apps that Play and sometimes Amazon too just will not allow. Getting an App from Play or Amazon is no guarantee of safety. --

Hayward K A R - 1 2 0 CPremium join:2000-07-13 Key West, FL kudos:1 | Not specifically but I have had Avast trap a few either on DL or at install. That I just dump and don't really keep record of.
And a huge number have very excessive permissions they don't need for the function of their task at hand and could be used maliciously or privacy invasion. Many of the free ones that don't have paid upgrades are particularly guilty of that. Free games are among the worst. --

Many people seem to forget that smartphones have always been aligning themselves with your average PC and are increasingly getting closer and closer in that regards. So while on your own desktop or laptop you may not download every random software application without doing even a little bit of investigation (what are the user reviews? Do they bundle toolbars? Does anything stick out as a little shady? Could I possibly get an app with similar functionality from a slightly more reputable source?), why would you not do the same with your smartphone?
I do agree there are a ton of great apps out there that may not be on the main Play store or even Amazon's store. I have a few choice apps myself off the Slideme store, namely a few game system emulators I have even paid for. But I have vetted all these ahead of time. So far I have not had a single nefarious app catch me off guard. I've only ever had ONE that I installed out of better judgement even after reading negative reviews because I really wanted to check it out. But all it had was the annoying persistent notification bar ads. My phone plan is a fairly anemic prepaid plan too with 10MB of data and 250 texts/minutes (not running Droidwall or any limiter apps either, after a long while of understanding usage and restricting myself while on 3G) and i have not had anything chew away at this more than needed for normal usage and if anything could have sucked away contact info and used for ill will, I haven't had any reports of it happening yet. And I am one of those people who doesn't do a real close look at permissions 90% of the time, save for the onesie unheard of apps. -- I swear, some people should have pace-makers installed to free up the resources. Breathing and heart beat taxes their whole system, all of their brain cells wasted on life support.-two bit brains, and the second bit is wasted on parity! ~head_spaz |
