3 edits | [Line Problem] Connection goes out several times a day! My DSL connection goes out many times a day. Sometimes even several times an hour!
Connection Speed 2528 Kbps 736 Kbps Line Attenuation 38.5 dB 21.0 dB Noise Margin 20.1 dB 10.0 dB
That's a few hours ago before some disconnections This is now...
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 1792 Kbps 192 Kbps Line Attenuation 49.6 dB 31.5 dB Noise Margin 6.0 dB 10.0 dB
I don't even know how that's "stable" at the moment. It's been connected for over an hour like this!
Oh, also, I did a line test the other day.... (I don't think there's anything personally identifying in this)

I don't get it. my attenuation is fine, I think, but not noise margin. I replaced all the DSL filters. I even changed the phone jack where the modem is connected. I put DSL filters on all the unused phone jacks & removed an unnecessary rj11 splitter. I also noticed a double filtered phone & fixed that. I disconnected a phone that might be bad. Some of these solutions have actually fixed problems in the past.
Sometimes I get speeds like 32kbps/32kbps. really annoying! speed varies greatly. Sometimes the downstream noise margin goes low when the connection is unstable, but it's usually pretty good. I don't know if my connection is interleaved or not, or if it should be. It used to be, but I don't know now.
There was this one day where lots of people in town had trouble. Here, it was out completely for about 24 hrs I think. Then it was fine for a week. After that, it started doing this kinda crap. I dunno if there's any link to that outage or not.
There was this one day where a Comcast tech was playing with stuff on a pole. (he didn't seem very careful. I was kinda worried he was going to fall, but he didn't) I'm not sure what he was doing. He had just knocked on a door to a house where no one lives. But anyway, I'm not sure why he would have touched phone lines. I can't even remember for sure if my problems started before or after that. Just thought I would mention it.
Every once in a while, it will be stable for like 12 hrs, but it doesn't happen often. like maybe once in the past week. Usually even less often than that.
My modem isn't even a year old. Funny thing... from the time I got the new modem (november last year, I think) up until this crap started, the internet really didn't go out often at all. I thought it was a fix to any minor troubles I had. Troubles which came back & are now worse than ever.
My router is a few years old, but it seems to be working fine.
There's also intermittent static on the phone line. that may or may not be connected, I dont know.
sick of this crap. any clue what is going on here? I can't test at the NID because I don't have one. Seriously, it's nowhere to be found. It's an old house. I don't even know where the demarcation point is located. Trying to have an NID installed would be a big hassle.
Do I have any options here? (...other than calling the phone company, and then if they can't resolve the problem, Earthlink afterward) Is there anything I can do?
(I'm in Washington County, PA, if that matters) |

There is the biggest issue right at the top. That noise must be removed or your line will never be stable. Static will knock out the DSL signal. Your line should be dead quiet after pressing 1 to dismiss the dial tone.

said by GrayFox777:Trying to have an NID installed would be a big hassle. It is a free service when there is no existing NID at your residence. You simply call the telephone company and request the NID to be installed as you are having trouble with your voice line and static that you need to troubleshoot. That will give you the needed test point to determine if the static is inside the residence or outside the residence.

4 edits | Strange thing. It's been connected for over 25 hours now that the weather's been cooler for the weekend. There's a lot less static too. I don't know if I trust it though. But the last time the connection stayed live this long was probably when it was cooler during spring. I can't remember if there was any static back then.
Can they install an NID without coming inside at all? I don't know if anyone would be around during the day. Is the installation guaranteed free with Verizon? Definitely?
thank you for the reply
EDIT: Another cold night, but the internet will barely stay connected for five or ten minutes.

Another hostmycalls line test thing. It looks like there are problems with some Verizon routers. Similar problems are present in the August test. Maybe the cause of all my trouble? |

»no NID!
said by JTS33: Verizon will happily come out to install an NID for you for free. Without the NID, they can't tell you to "test at the NID" before sending out a field technician for a line problem. Which means they can't charge you if the problem turns out to be on your side. With the NID in place, you're expected to determine if the problem is on your side or the telco side by testing at the NID before they send out a field technician.
You might even get the tech to include a modular DSL splitter inside the NID, which filters a lot better than the in-line microfilters.

You need to test at the NID (after it is installed) and check line stats at NID compared to what you get with the Modem in its current location. Comparing those DSL Stats will tell you how much, if any, your inside wiring is affecting the phone line.
»EarthLink DSL FAQ »How do I test at my NID? What does it look like?
First things first is to get the NID installed and then determine if the static is inside or outside of your residence. Then either you or the Telco will need to correct what is found to be the source off the static/line noise as there should be none present on your phone line. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

3 edits | Will it be okay if no one is home/available that day? Does the old demarcation point need to be located and removed? (though I don't know if there is one at all) I'm guessing that they will refuse to do anything until there's an NID, because they wouldn't wanna be responsible for inside repair costs? |

I don't know how Verizon works. Sorry, I'm in former BellSouth territory. You might just ask them? -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |
