Owen Sound, eh? Does this mean you'll now admit that a significant portion of the Canadian population is indeed covered by 3G or 4G service? :P

Nope. Because there is a huge amount of territory that is still unlit. And neither Rogers nor Bell have lit LTE, yet. Bell is still selling WiMax in Bruce County.

A higher percentage of the Canadian population is covered by 3G services like UMTS/HSPA than they were by 2G like IS-96 ("CDMA") and GSM, and it has been this way for the past few years. As I sit here, I have a Rogers LTE signal on my phone down here in little ol' forgotten Fort Erie.

Either way, is that LTE location in Owen Sound the same location where you shared pictures of the antennas being installed?

No. The TELUS tower is way out on the edge of the city. And OS, Sauble and Goderich are the only lit LTE sites in Grey, Bruce and Huron counties. That's a lot of real estate.

Any when are they going to either partner with TBayTel or build with Rogers coverage on the Trans-Canada highway in Nothern Ontario to Thunder Bay and Winnipeg? I understand they have coverage from Winnipeg west-ward. Recent reports here in the States show AT&T finishing HSPA+ coverage on I-75 from the Sault. Ste. Marie border to the Ohio border. Some of it is on T-1 backhaul but by Q1 2014 those areas should be on fibre backhaul + LTE.

I just posted that TELUS sent me. Otherwise, a Ouija board might be best.

It'll take some time, but eventually they'll get all of the cottager communities covered.

Depends on your beliefs.

Some of the outlying areas may need to wait for 700MHz to get solid reliable coverage, but you'll see a lot more LTE lit up in AWS sooner than you think.

I assume these are co-located sites with Bell HSPA+/LTE as well right?

I believe so. Bell hasn't announced any LTE lightups around here, at least.

All of those areas are most likely already covered with 800MHz HSPA, which is Bell's network but Telus uses as a home network as part of the mutual roaming agreement with Telus' 800MHz HSPA in Western Canada.

Those specific towers that are going up are probably Telus 1900MHz cell sites, and are not shared with Bell and aren't even necessarily co-located. The 1900MHz networks (and LTE networks) are completely separate as Telus does not have any 800MHz spectrum in Ontario. The reason Telus is building out is probably for no reason other than to get the backhaul in place to eventually light up LTE on them, as the performance and propagation characteristics between 1900MHz HSPA and LTE on AWS are similar.

Seriously, you'll get LTE up that way before Jesus comes back - or, at the very least, during your lifetime despite already being older than dirt and walking the Earth while dinosaurs roamed.

That looks like Bell 800MHz equipment, not Telus. Telus probably just roams on it as if it were home.

If it were actual Telus equipment it would be 1900MHz and the antennas would be smaller and lower to the ground.

Bell shows 800, 1900 and 2100 Mhz antennas on that tower. Telus also uses that tower, confirmed by a Telus technician. I had a fascinating discussion with him about why Bell had a better signal than Telus at my cottage at Sauble. That being said, I am getting 2.02 Mbps down, 0.80 Mbps up and 78 ms ping on 3G off that tower using my cellular amplifier/repeater.

The lower cluster could be 1900MHz antennas, but it's real hard to tell. Those are usually installed quite a bit lower. I'm surprised Bell would have 1900MHz in a rural area, though I suppose capacity could be an issue in the summer up that way.
