[Cable] Congestion near MAC?
I'm on the Start 30/2 package and live right beside McMaster University. Pretty much since I moved back to Hamilton and activated Start I've noticed this lag however in the past few weeks it has gotten brutal in the evenings. When at it's worst and I'm playing World of Warcraft my game will freeze up for about 5 seconds every 10-15 seconds.
I've been doing some ping tests on Google and what I've noticed is, when the lag is at it's worst and WoW is completely locking up i'm getting packet loss for those few seconds (2-3 responses). When the lag isn't as bad but I can still feel it I notice spikes of 800-1200.
I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing this in the McMaster area... for obvious reasons it could just be congestion to all the MAC students coming back for the September semester.
I'm also somewhat worried it might be something wrong with my home network though but I don't really see how... I'm running 2 E4200s, one of them has stalk linksys firmware while the other has DD-WRT. The router running DD-WRT is bridged for the second floor of my house. My PC is connected to my bridged router upstairs however there is also lag on the machines downstairs at the same time.
If it is congestion I was thinking about switching to Starts 50/10 DSL plan which would probably help.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Have you done a factory reset and tried directly connected to the modem? That would help rule out your network, as well as give the modem a chance to find a better channel selection.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I was going to test this again tonight (I have done it in the past and it hasn't helped) but the lag is behaving itself tonight. I see it jumping around in my ping tests up to about 500-1000 but i'm not feeling it tonight.
you should get mtr or winmtr and run a test on google.ca or start.ca for a few minutes and post it here, might help identify the issue.
