am_dew join:2003-11-10 Sacramento, CA 1 edit | [Speed Problem] "Link Down" messages in modem log and I have experienced many disconnects recently...I know this because I leave a telnet session open all the time and when it disconnects, I get a message. In looking at my Speedstream 4100 modem's log, I see the following (or similar) whenever a disconnect happens:
2013/09/06 23:39:25 GMT E |DSL |Link Down 2013/09/06 23:39:26 GMT E |DSL |State: WAITING 2013/09/06 23:39:35 GMT E |DSL |State: INITIALIZING 2013/09/06 23:39:42 GMT E |DSL |HYBRID 1 2013/09/06 23:39:42 GMT E |DSL |Link up 3 US 768 DS 5056 (INTL:G.dmt)
I am also getting very erratic results from speed tests done at speedtest.net. I have the 6.0 MB/s service and the results used to be 5.14 MB/s download, but now I am lucky if I get 4.0 MB/s download and even then the speed graph has many peaks and valleys in it so the speed is not consistent at all.
I called AT&T the other day and they remotely checked my line and they did make a few corrections but said that the line was otherwise OK and I should be getting good speeds. They want me to buy a new DSL modem to rule out that piece of hardware since the Speedstream 4100 is fairly old, so I will go get a new modem this weekend to see if that helps things or not. I had slow/erratic speed test results back in May 2013 and AT&T was able to find and correct an issue with my DSLAM and that resulted in my speed coming back to what it once was, so I cannot help but wonder if that is the issue again.
Can anyone tell me that the "Link Down" log entries indicate? Is that saying that the DSL link into the modem went down?
Thanks! |

That's what I wanted to see Have you ever checked the statistics with the modem connected to the phone box that's mounted to a outside wall |

|
am_dew join:2003-11-10 Sacramento, CA | I get the feeling that is not something I can do however. It may be time to switch to cable...too bad because when this DSL is workiing OK, I am happy with the 6.0 MB/s service since I don't have a bunch of connections...just my PC and a BluRay player which is rarely used. |

Re: [Speed Problem] "Link Down" messages in modem log Have you gone and bought a new modem yet? I got a few spares and will send you one, all you had to do is cover the postage. |
|
am_dew join:2003-11-10 Sacramento, CA | Thanks OSU. No, I have not but not sure I need to after hearing wayjac's comments. |
|
 | let me know I have a newer modem only one, a 2wire 2701 and a Netgear (7550?) from AT&T. Would rather help a fellow DSLR'er out vs sell it online. |

am_dew join:2003-11-10 Sacramento, CA | I am thinking of taking my DSL modem over to my girlfriend's house where she also has AT&T DSL 6.0 service (and gets the speeds I used to get), in order to verify that my modem is good or not. But, I am not sure if my PPPOE userid/password would work using her phone line. Is the PPPOE authentication data bound to the service phone number? |
|
 | Technically no, unless that's changed since 2010-2011 |
|
am_dew join:2003-11-10 Sacramento, CA | The modem works fine at my GF's house so that is not the issue here. I have no reason to believe that my inside wiring is at fault so I believe this issue is somewhere in AT&T's domain. |
|
am_dew join:2003-11-10 Sacramento, CA | Any suggestions on what I should say to the AT&T tech support guy who is supposed to call me tonite to see if a new modem made any difference? Last I spoke with him was on Friday but since then I have found out that my current modem works fine at my GF's house, I saw no sense in buying a new one. Also, I tried replacing the shielded cable that goes from the phone jack on the wall to the modem and that did not make any difference. It really looks like this is AT&T's issue...the problem is convincing them of that. |

just tell them the new one isn't working and you are still dropping sync. That should prompt them to send a field guy. |

am_dew join:2003-11-10 Sacramento, CA | I did not get a call back last night. I have all but had it with AT&T and am seriously considering moving to Xfinity for both voice and internet. |

well with the attenuation of 23db downstream that is well in line with the elite profile. So there shouldn't be problems with the elite tier, only thought might be the jack itself or a line between the apartment and the wire closet (apartments).
I can set you up a ticket if you wish, you would have to contact me though with the details about your service or post in the direct forum (»AT&T Direct) -- If you have a topic in the direct forum please reply to it or a post of mine, I get a notification when you do this.
