1 edit | [Speed] Only 8mbps down on the 50mbps - Lincolnwood, IL Has anyone else experienced this issue? We previously used Comcast but switched to RCN when moving into our new apartment a week ago. We have the 50mbps plan with RCN however my speeds have been between 2 and 10 mbps the whole time.

| sorry I had a lol moment... basically he wants to understand your signal levels. i think its one of the 6 tabs on the top (if you happen to have a motorola sbxxxx cable modem).
should be Transmit and Forward power in dBmV and SNR in dBm.
thanks, cchhat01 -- "Look at me, I'm Dr. Zoidberg, homeowner." |

That is not the information that I expected. Here is the information that I get from that link.
RF Parameters Downstream Freq/Power: 663.000 MHz 2 dBmV Signal to Noise Ratio: 38 dB Modulation: QAM256 Upstream Freq/Power: 30.700 MHz 30 dBmV Channel Type: DOCSIS 2.0 (ATDMA) Symbol Rate: 5120 kSym/sec Modulation: QAM64
You can get upstream/downstream power levels from the RCN speedtest |
|
 | transmit power - 41.5 dBmv forward power - 0 dBmv forward signal to noise - 36.1 dB |
|
 | Well your power levels are essentially perfect.
Are you still getting such slow speeds? |
|
 | Thats what I thought. I'm going to have to call RCN tomorrow I guess. |
|
 | Usually problems that severe result in terrible power levels. The hard part is figuring out how to fix the problem. |
|
 | 2 weeks later the issue is no better. I've spent over 8 hours on the phone with RCN at this point and they've sent 2 different tech's out. Further testing has revealed that the service works fine during the day, but starts having issues between 7 and 10 pm. Speeds during that time will drop to 10 mbps or below and the latency sky rockets. It works fine during all other times of day. I'm giving them a few more days to sort out but if its not fixed I'm heading back to comcast. It's more expensive but I never had services problems this bad. |

Sounds like noise issues most likely. I was experiencing something similar few years back. They ended up tracking it down to noise on the blade I was on due to high load at a certain time of day (evening). -- Insanity is living in a state of illusion. |

Any updates to the problem? |

 | It's still a mess. I had a 3rd tech out a week and a half ago now. He was the first tech to actually go outside and look at the wiring. Turns out squirrels had chewed through most of the lines in the box as well as the main feeder cable. I was told a work order was placed and it would be rewired within 72 hours. A week and a half later its still not fixed. I just called and they had no work orders for the wiring. They're now coming monday morning to do the job. What's even more annoying is that I have to be home for the appointment even though all they need to access is the cable box for the apartment. The only reason I haven't canceled and gone back to Comcast yet is that I simply haven't had the time. My whole RCN experience has been a completely nightmare. Nothing but terrible customer service and clueless technicians. |
