[INTERNET] Cogeco Cable calls me .. but only a TEST???

I am confused by what Cogeco Cable is doing right now. They called me and said I must call them as soon as possible but when I did call I only got a machine (and I called right after the call) that said "B241 TEST SUCCESSFUL"

What was that about? Has anyone else had that call too? What are they doing? Was it really Cogeco or a scam? I am so confused.

The number I was told to call was 1-866-232-1017

Don't know where in Canada you are, the number is not on the website to contact by phone. »www.cogeco.ca/web/on/en/resident···hone.php

Go to Cogeco website for your location, call customer support and ask them.

I never call a number given to me by a call not initiated by me, unless it checks out on their website or in the phone book.

Edit: I'm having brain burps today, just dawned on me your user name is your location. (a face palming for myself)

Just googled the "B241 Test Successful" and get many hits that it could be adding your active telephone number to those scum bag scamming overseas telemarketers lists. You maybe in for some unwanted calls.

Edit: Chances are that the original call was not from Cogeco. Just like the scammers that call with the "they are from Microsoft and your computer is infected" scam. Or it's a credit agency collecting money owed to Cogeco. Do you owe money to Cogeco?

Nope .. no money owed. IN fact I called them and they said that my payment should be showing up next week as fully paid since it takes time through banking. Also I don't fall for scams but this one was not typical of scams so .. curious. Never came across a call like this before.

I am actually wondering if it is a tactic used by debt collectors to see if you do actually ever answer your phone or are just ignoring them lol. But no I don't owe any money to Cogeco once this one goes through and when I called Cogeco directly through the number on my bill they had no problems with me.

The only money I owe anyone is from College before I ended up living on life sustaining therapy (meaning dialysis machine on which without I would have died). Paid off half my college loan in only 3 years and then got real sick. Didn't qualify for medical forgiveness ONLY because the government has this law that states "if you went to school on an OSAP loan between 1995 and 2000 you cannot qualify for bankruptcy (no matter how bad your health is) and cannot qualify for medical forgiveness unless you get sick within 7 months of finishing school."

I know it is a far stretch but if it wasn't Cogeco ... it is the only thing I can think of. I am currently unemployed and on disability where I get a max of $900 to live on every month.

If it was a scammer, I will be leary for sure but I am already pretty educated about scams and know what to watch out for. This one did not have any of the typical indicators of being a scam .. until I called back and it said it was a test.

The number is real but I'd call Cogeco customer service and ask them if there are any details of your account that would prompt them to call you.

Can't see it having to do with your College loan. OSAP is pretty good about giving you time to pay off the loan and will work with you, not against you as we have gone through the same thing with my husband's student loans (University and College) from way before 1995 and have paid them off.

Credit Agency representing Telus calls my cell all the time for someone who owned the number before me 8 years ago. I'm not with Telus and never have been. I keep telling them that person is no longer the owner of my cell number, but they keep calling and I now ignore their calls letting it go to voice mail. They try a lot of sneaky things to get me to call them, but I catch on to them. Like I am going to pay some person's, who I don't know, debt to them.

I would do what urbanriot says and see what prompt them to call you in the first place. Maybe, they are looking for someone who had Cogeco services before at where you are living now.

Hope you find out soon what it is all about. If anything, to just ease any anxiety you may have right now about it.

Good Luck.

Haven't heard anything about this, so my initial guess would be that this is not from Cogeco.

Hi,
The carrier for that toll free number is bandwidth.com, a voip provider. Most certainly a phishing attempt. Too bad you called it back.

Aaron, get your VOIP folks to contact their carrier connections and see if anyone knows or can find anyone at bandwidth.com that will accept a fraudulent use report and drop the number. While not Cogeco's fault, obviously your customers are confused by it.

Thanks for looking into this for me. I wonder what they will try to do. I did not give any info. Only answered and said Hello? and got their recorded message of test successful..

Hard to say what these boneheads are up to. Such a pain. You may suffer some additional hoax calls in the future.

I've picked on Cogeco long enough. Who's next? Any volunteers?

Bah I don't answer any calls until they say who they are and I deem if it is important for me to answer ... some don't leave messages though..

Unfortunately this will likely happen ...

Phone rings I answer.. Hello ... silence then ...

Caller: Hello... this is Hank. May I speak to owner home?"
Me: "Yes speaking I am owner home".
Caller: "I am calling you on behalf of cleaning your dicks cleaning. Would you like your dicks cleaned?
Me: "No thanks ...My dicks are completely clean"
Caller: "You don't have dirty dicks?"
Me: "Well no... Not that I know of ... but thanks for your concern ... goodbye"

That conversation actually happened the other night.

Wow that number is very close to a Cogeco number for their Credit Department: 1-800-232-9017
