[FiOS] home wired networking from ONT to rest of house

I have the ONT located out in my garage, and the frontier provided router is located in my living room. The ethernet cable from the ONT to the router has been run up through the attic and down the wall.

Due to the sad pathetic wireless signal we're getting from the router, I want to be able to have all of the bedrooms (4) as well as the living room to be wired with it's own ethernet jack, and I kind of have an idea as to how to do it.

The question is, do I need to use the westel router? Can i just swap in an 8 port router, assuming I can find one, and run the cats through out the house?

Wireless networking is fine, but let's face it. The router blows when it comes to reliability, and often I'm finding that I'm losing my signal, even when my android phone or any of our wireless laptop is 3 feet away from the router. The signal strength tends to be around 50% and our smart tv tends to need to buffer while watching netflix.

Just so you know i'm not at all familiar with Fios.

What kind of router is in the living room, is it one of your everyday 4 port kind? Why not get something like a 8 port switch that will plug into the router that way you won't be limited on ports?

You could treat the router as your backbone of your home network, and use one of the four ports to feed a switch.... And all of the rooms that are "Wired" could plug into the switch.

You might even move the router out by the ONT? You could turn off the wireless, and get yourself an access point and place it in the house. In saying that what if you got another switch, plugged it into the second port of the router, then you could place multiple access points throughout the house for coverage.

But in saying that, you might outgrow what the router can handle. If thats the case then maybe setup a custom build mini itx system as your router with say pfsense on it.....

But now i'm getting way ahead of myself, lol....

What's your thoughts on all of this?

You mention that you're currently connected to the ONT with an "ethernet cable" running to the Westel router. As long as you're connecting to the ethernet/rj45 port on the ONT, not the coax port (MOCA connection), you can replace the router with something else, if you desire.

One note: be sure to have the Westel router release its IP lease before you swap in the new router. You can only have one active DHCP lease on your FiOS service, so if you do not release it, the new router will not be able to get an IP address until your existing lease expires.

Just be sure that you're using a router, not a regular switch. Since you cannot have more than one IP address from Frontier, you'll still need a routing device between your computers and the ONT to provide the necessary NAT/PAT functionality of sharing the public IP.

The only thing I point out is if you have TV service over FIOS, if you don't then never mind. If you do have TV service you MUST keep the provided router in place. You can though turn the westell router into a bridge on address 192.168.1.1 through .99, anything above 100 is used for the boxes. That way the new router you set in place will be the that actual routing.
