CdTriX join:2005-04-25 Oakville, ON | [INTERNET] Online Gaming Latency Inconsistant since Janurary Since the start of this year, I've seen my ping spikes from 90 to 250 randomly. It doesn't matter what game I play, League of Legends, Guild Wars 2, Battlefield 3, my initial ping is low but now I've been getting spikes for the last several months. It's prevented me from paying League of Legends competatively because the ping spikes make me a liability. It has caused a lot of personal stress because I cannot maintain a stable ping. I was removed from the competative team for League of legends, I cannot play any of the games that I enjoy. It just spikes to 250-300 randomly.
Has anyone else noticed a large increase in ping spikes since the 2013 started? |
|
 | Yes! Every single night when I play league of legends my ping increases to 120-140-200. During the day I will ping fine (constant 83) and then for a few hours every single night my ping rises and stays around 120-140 without fail. It is SO FRUSTRATING. |
|
2 edits | As we speak I am playing a game of LoL with a constant 170 ping. This issue is ridiculous it has happened EVERY single night for the past month and it completely unacceptable. I was hoping it would fix on its own. There is nobody else even USING the internet in my house. If cogeco does not resolve this issue soon i will be undoubtedly forced to change ISPS. I dont want to sound entitled but I am in the top 0.01% of ranked players in LoL and with this CONSTANT high ping every single night.. it is near impossible for me to play comfortably as it is double what I should normally be pinging.
I would like to also add that this only happens in game of league of legends. I have yet to test other games, however if I am in ventrilo I will be pinging a constant 50ms without any spikes in ping ever. |

Do you guys know what the server addresses of this game are? It would be helpful in determining where the issue is, if it's an LoL issue or a Cogeco issue or something in between... |

Here are the Addresses that I know of from Riot themselves:
64.7.194.0/24 216.133.234.0/24 192.64.168.0/24
This is from their official network test script |

I'm not sure this is a Cogeco issue, I do a lot of online gaming through the day with little to no ping issues. My connection is reliable and stable 24 hours a day to World of Tanks at about 20-30ms pings. I also have a very stable connection to a few mmorpg's I play often, never ping above 50 or so. If it is a connection issue on the Cogeco end, its certainly not the entire network. |

For at least a couple of weeks, I'd be playing with a ping of about 30ms - 40ms, and then out of no where it would spike. There was a huge thread on their forums about it with people all over Canada experiencing the same thing.
From the traceroutes that were posted here, it appears that the issue is with a few providers in the States. I wonder if their customers are also having issues, or if any customers of other providers in Canada are having the same issues with League of Legends.
I'll look deeper into this. |

Try using opendns, see if that helps. |

 | Third party DNS servers have nothing to do with server latency and in some cases can have a detrimental effect to resolution time of DNS addresses... which is not the reported problem above. |

Re: [INTERNET] Online Gaming Latency Inconsistant since Janurary Opendns can change the routing transit and CDN content servers giving you a different path. It takes 2 seconds to do and if it does not work no harm no foul. Just change back, worth a shot.
Better than doing nothing waiting for Cogeco to pass the buck. |

Thanks for the reply aaron I appreciate it, the issue appears to be LoL-specific and happens daily around 8pm est for a few hours. |

I'll look deeper into this. Just thought I should provide an update, it is currently 8:40 pm EST in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and my ping has increased to 100 on LoL servers from the steady 83 ms I have been getting all day. It is slowly increasing and will be 140-170ms within the next 30 mins as the pattern over the past week that has developed has dictated.. |

I'm experiencing the same problem, though my ISP is Start the issue is still with Cogeco as they're a third-party ISP that uses Cogeco's lines.
I've been playing League of Legends for nearly three years and have always maintained a constant 80-90ms. Now as the OP said, every night at 8pm it starts becoming unstable (spiking up to 200ms at times which makes everything sluggish). The worst part is it doesn't stay constant, it will be around 100 one second then 200 the next.
Hopefully this is only temporary as League of Legends is currently the #1 most played online PC game with over 32 million players. |

I asked a friend on Bell to test the routes and the latency is just as high so this isn't a Cogeco problem per se.
In fact the 216.52.255.103 was about 60 ms higher with Bell. |

Yeah, on an "our network" basis, there is not much we can do about it, as the packets are leaving our network in good shape. However, I'm trying for an "off-network" solution. Not much headway so far unfortunately.
The research I've being doing has been pointing to a Comcast and/or AT&T issue, and several forums have been customers of other providers getting the same high pings.
Like I stated before, I had the same issue when I was playing SWTOR, and as a temporary solution I installed WTFast and my ping went to reasonable levels, but I'm trying to find a solution that doesn't cost an extra $5 a month. |
|
 | The issue remains at large... 7:30 pm est ping has spiked to a constant 170ms in LoL once again while I have a constant 40ms in a ventrilo server that is near the same area as the LoL servers..
@Aaron I tried using WTfast and my ping only decreased from a constant 170 to 130. A significant improvement but with ping that high I am still at a significant disadvantage and it is quite frustrating. |

Hey aaron not sure if you are still reading this thread and I appreciate you trying to look into the issue further. Just wanted to let you know that the issue is definitely LoL-specific and is still occurring on a daily basis. Yesterday (september 18th) my ping was a constant 100 higher than what I normally average from 12pmest-10pmest. And today (september 19th) the issue started up again around 8pmest while my ping was fine during the day.
Something of interest I thought you should know is that the issue appears to be specific to ontario / new york area as if you look at this thread
»forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/bo···=3866845
the majority of the people are living in that area.
Thanks again for the help,
A frustrated gamer T_T |

 | said by TypeS:Have you already tried applying the Laetrix tweak to Windows TCP/IP? Yes, I have and it has not improved whatsoever. I have also tried contacting riot support on multiple occasions and they have only given me generic responses like disable ipv6 on windows and to use a direct line to the modem.. despite the fact that there are likely hundreds or thousands of people experiencing this lag simultaneously.. I highly doubt it is such a specific problem. Very frustrated. Although I must say that today (september 23rd, 2013) is the first day I have not noticed any ping spikes in a long time.. (fingers crossed). |
|
 | I hope things are resolved for you. It always bothers me that one piece of crap equipment 1000 km away can cause so many problems for so many different services. |
|
 | I know specifically with regards to League of Legends, Comcast has been such an issue for them that it's basically turned into a meme (any time someone lags, the immediate response is "Comcast OP"). |
