 | [General] fiber optics coming to town Hello,
My office is in a small town, where a new, local fiber optic company (CoastCom) is installing their fiber optic lines. We are scheduled to have a drop to our building active within the next three months.
Currently, six of us in the office share a single Wave Broadband HSI connection through a modem gateway connected to a router going to a P2P hub in our office. We have no complaints about our service, which we have had for about a dozen years. We have been using Norton 360 for the past 3+ years for most of our security needs (including a s/w firewall), and our ISP modem provides a hardware firewall.
I have a few questions because I don't know what to expect with this upgrade. 1) Will we need to purchase any new hardware? 2) Will we need a special hardware firewall to handle the high speed connection (we have been told this is so) 3) Is fiber optic service usually billed by usage, or a flat rate? 4) What's an average price per month for a small setup like ours? (We are currently paying about $60/month for our existing service)
Thank you for your time. |

Generally, no, however a new router may increase overall capacity on your internal network.

We've gotten nebulous answers to our questions thus far, hence my questions in the forum. Your answers are quite helpful.
Cheers! |

| Interesting. I looked at what I think was the website for CoastCom and could not find much about the services they offer our the rate structure. Maybe they will offer more information as they get closer top the install date. If not, don't sign anything until you have full disclosure. |

Looking at their website, they don't look like a company designed around small office/businesses doing standard fiber to the premises. They look more like a company who targets medium-large businesses with pricey ethernet transport and dedicated internet access. But I could be wrong and I would try to find out pricing regardless. |
