Re: [Hockey] Official Ottawa Senators 2013-2014 Hockey Thread

From @SunGarrioch:

Asked if the Leafs will get over their playoff collapse, Macarthur quipped: "I hope not." He smiled, folks. #Sens

At team is just a collection of players. -2 in that game he should probably shut his mouth about it, but if he wants to bring some of that to the Sens it's fine with me

I didn't hear too much about him, but I wasn't watching the pre-season games and only caught some of them on the radio. He did earn quite a bit of praise during the rookie camp but I think the main pre-season camp had a lot of focus only on (a) returning NHLers, and (b) a select few players who might make the team (Pageau, Conacher, Da Costa, Zbad).

Twitter went ape***t over Zibanejad being sent to Bingo today, but he was outplayed by JGP, CC and SDC and since he doesn't need to clear waivers it makes sense for him to got to Bingo to get some top line minutes. An interview with Bryan Murray today showed that he wasn't performing hard enough and needed better conditioning to compete at the NHL level regardless of how many games he had appeared in last season.

yea, i heard Murray's comments today...he didn't pull any punches that's for sure...he basically said the others really stepped up, and even knowing that, Zbad did nothing to up his game, so down he goes...some good tough love.

Finally, game day. At the morning skate:

F lines: 9MM-JS-BR6, MacArthur-Turris-Conch, Greening-Pageau-Condra, Smith-DaCosta-Neil (no Kassian)

D pairings: EK65-MM, Cowen-Wiercioch, Phillips-Gryba (no Corvo)

G: Anderson

It's interesting that Corvo, who has been skating with Phillips all week (and with him as the PP2 pairing) was skating as the 7th defenceman in the morning skate. I'm happy to see no Kassian, not because I don't like the guy, but because the Slugs are dressing John Scott to skate on the 4th line with Patrick Kaleta. Either BUF's 4th line gets very limited ice time, or there will be extra tasty opportunities for the Senators if they get regular shifts. I also don't want to see the pointless fight of enforcer vs nuclear deterrent.

This is very strange how late the Sens are starting, 3 days after most other teams.

There are 4 teams left that haven't played a game yet:

Senators, Hurricanes, Blue Jackets, Islanders

All four are playing tonight.

Oh, weird... well here's hoping for a shootout game for the Sens tonight so they can be tired for the Leafs tomorrow

No score after one period in Buffalo. Miller and Anderson both playing very well

Still no score after two... some missed chances by both sides, and some spectacular saves by both goalies

Sens win 1-0

Karlsson with the only goal (nice feed from MacArthur) with under 2 minutes to play

What a goaltending clinic! Team USA had better have had a scout in the building tonight.

SOG: OTT 46 , BUF 35

Craig Anderson now leads or ties the league in GAA, SV% and shutouts.

2nd game of a back to back is against the Leafs.....wow, that doesn't sound familiar at all. Will there be changes to the lineup, to insert Kassian and/or Corvo? Corvo for Gryba, but Kassian for...? I say DaCo comes out, Smith moves to C and Kassian goes in on that line. Gryba stays.

sweet...making me look like a genius...i have Anderson and Howard as my goalies in the hockey pool at work.

a shutout is 8 points (3 for the win plus 5 bonus points for shutout).

meh...i didn't mind MacArthur, but take his word at face value, from a young player who's already with his 4th team in 7 years...Carlyle's style of "tough love" works with some, doesn't work with others...at the end of the day, what counts is results...i'm still sad that Grabs was let go, but it's a business too.

Bobby Ryan hinted at this as well

i wouldn't say Carlyle is the best, but i think he is a good coach...his expectations are fairly simple...he expects the best...nothing wrong with demanding that from players who are paid millions to do their jobs...they are in the NHL because they are the "best of the best", so he simply expects they play as such...he makes the players accountable, all while trying to keep egos getting in the way of some (likely why he tries to prevent his young players from thinking they are "all that").

BTW Lupul and Carlyle had it out in Anaheim it seems

yea, that's old news though...Carlyle said he was wrong about Lupul and that he is very pleased with his play here.

The refs were atrocious. 6-1 in penalties in favour of the leafs. and some blatant non calls at the end that helped the Sens

Here is a hint Refs.. call them all or call none

No, just #leafstypical. These are the same fan base that thought #parrosing was funny, after all.

i didn't think the calls were biased towards the Leafs at all...there were a couple of blatant calls that were called...a couple of Leafs were high sticked in the face, no calls...Kadri was hauled down late game (on a borderline breakaway) and no call...i do remember one of the calls the Sens had that i thought was a little iffy, but i don't think the whole game was like that.
