Re: [Install] Installation question

I tried to get just a bridge modem when I signed up but I was told by Comcast that they do not lease them any more due to future compatibility reasons. What I may do if getting it bridged becomes an issue is to go to a Comcast kiosk in my area and buy a 'modem only' device and then just use the leased gateway for phone and the modem I purchased for internet.

That would work. BestBuy and TigerDirect also carry them.

I received the 862 on my install. I just hung a linksys off it and everything is good without putting it in bridged mode.

I cannot get my 862 to play nicely with my Netgear router. Did you do anything special to get them to work together?

Double NATing may reveal it's ugly head on your network eventually. Some applications will be broken (such as some VPN's) and / or more difficult to get functioning / configured. Port forwarding will be more complicated as well..

Those are the kinds of issues I had when I tried hooking my Netgear router up to to the 862 supplied by Comcast.

Wanting to get all this behind me, I went out at lunch and bought a Motorola SB6141 cable modem so hopefully I can just call Comcast later to get it activated and then be able to use my Netgear router.

Anyone know if Comcast will provision my purchased cable modem and still let me keep the Comcast supplied 862 gateway for just voice?

Unless they have a voice only modem they would be willing to swap for the 862 gateway they will have to let you keep it. They will probably disable internet use on it though.

Cool...thanks. I'm waiting for a callback from Comcast support because their "wait times are higher than normal"...not holding my breath.
