First pre-season game and one kid stands out. Hunter Shinkaruk scores a beauty with mom and dad in the stands. I love his parents reaction. What a moment for Hunter and what a moment for them. He puts that puck into a hole the size of a pocketbook.
Unfortunately, NHL Centre Ice isn't providing a free preview yet, so I wasn't able to watch the game. Very disappointing as I assumed it would be on and was looking forward to watching. But it looks like some young players had a pretty good outing (the box scores included a number of names new to me).
Friend of his who worked with Torts said the players all hated him. Can't imagine what the Sedins will do if Torts blows a gasket on them. Cry or answer the bell?
I'm not sure they'll answer the bell, but I wouldn't be surprised if their agent told them to demand a trade if they don't like the coach. They are UFAs at the end of the season too. -- All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter, dreamers turn to look at the cars - Peart / Lifeson / Lee Join Team Helix
One would hope they answer the bell. I agree, though, that their reaction might be the opposite. Would a trade at this point, if a decent one could be arranged, perhaps set Vancouver up for longer term success? The Canucks are about to enter a serious re-building phase as the best players pass their prime, so perhaps the Sedins are a rental to another team in return for some good prospects. That's not my preference, but it's not unreasonable.
Hunter Shinkaruk looked great............only a pre-season game, but there were some positives.
Eddie Lack looks like he might be the backup or even contend for the #1 if Luongo craps out. -- Sarcasm is the body's natural defense against stupidity.

I think Lack is "steady" and most likely a capable back up keeper. I doubt he could ever carry the load if Luongo had a long term injury. Cannata looks just as steady and maybe a better reaction keeper.
It's only pre-season and definitely too early to pass judgement on this team...........but given the lack of moves and the same d-man corps coming back, there really isn't much belief that this bunch can be any better than last year.
The keys maybe how Torts can switch these guys on and if the rookies can play on a regular basis............Kesler,Burrows .Kassian and the putz Bieksa are going to have play 10 times better than they did last year or else.
That division has gotten better with the exception of the Flames and the Canucks and them will be fighting for the bottom.............IMO./ -- Sarcasm is the body's natural defense against stupidity.
I see Schneider had a great game in the Devils 1st pre-season game. Brodeur pulled a Luongo in the Devils 2nd pre season game letting in 4 during his 40 minutes in the nets.
Man oh man....I still feel sick about losing Schneider. :-(
If the stars (past their prime or otherwise) could just play consistently, it could be an okay season. But they seem incapable of maintaining that consistency. Sure, multiple 40 goal players would be great, but if they all scored 30, that'd be okay (rather than one with 35 and the rest with 20).
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that forward Mason Raymond was signed to a one-year contract.
Raymond, who totaled 22 points in 46 games for the Vancouver Canucks last season, arrived in Toronto thanks to a professional tryout contract at the outset of training camp.
"Based on Mason's play in the preseason, we feel he fits in well with our group and will have a significant role on our team," said Leafs GM Dave Nonis. "We agreed to terms over the weekend and look forward to him making a strong contribution this season."
Raymond's addition is key, given that forward David Clarkson may face a 10- game suspension for leaving the bench to aid teammate Phil Kessel during a brawl between the Leafs and Sabres in Sunday's exhibition contest.
In 374 NHL appearances for the Canucks in six seasons, Raymond has accumulated 80 goals and 178 points, adding eight goals and 10 assists in 55 playoff tilts. -- Sarcasm is the body's natural defense against stupidity.
Canucks forward Dale Weise the remainder of the preseason for his hit Saturday on the Oilers' Taylor Hall. Zack Kassian gets eight games (3 preseason and 5 regular season) for swinging stick at Edmonton's Sam Gagner. -- Sarcasm is the body's natural defense against stupidity.
Re: [Hockey] Official Vancouver Canucks 2013-2014 Hockey Thread
This begs the question....if Kassian's unintentional (but must control his stick) high stick gets 3+5=8 games then what will Kessel get for those two handers and a spear?
