Repeatedly Losing Wireless Connection(If I'm posting this in the wrong place, forgive me. In all my years of visiting forums, I don't think I've ever seen one with so many sub-forums. Wow.)
My parents are having a lot of trouble with their wireless setup right now, and as their only son, that means I'm also having a lot of trouble with their wireless setup right now. I'm pretty good with certain types of technology problems, but wireless internet-related problems wouldn't be one of those types I've never even owned a cellphone, laptop, or a tablet. So, if anyone has a suggestion, I'm definitely willing to listen.
They're using Frontier Internet, a Netgear 7550 modem, a PC, a laptop, and two Rokus (an HD and a 2 XD). This time yesterday (and last week and last month), everything worked fine. They'd often have up to three devices running wirelessly at the same time without any problems. As far as I know, no one's changed any of the settings since then. Then it started flipping out on them last night. Every 15 to 30 minutes (estimated), their wireless devices would suddenly lose connection. It's clearly a wireless problem, because the ethernet-connected PC continues to work without any issues. If you reboot the modem, each wireless device will suddenly regain connection, and just as suddenly lose it again in another 15 to 30 minutes.
I've gone into the Netgear settings, and tried different combinations to no avail. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. |

Frontier provided them that modem and the first thing you should have them do is schedule a service call with Frontier. They will likely give them a new modem and it's entirely possible they will just end up having the same problem. Often times, you can not control the firmware updates on an ISP provided modem/router. I just hooked up new service and this time went and bought my own modem and router. For around $100, you can go get a Netgear 750. It's highly rated, you can assure you have the latest and greatest firmware, and if anything changes in the future, you own the router and can take it with you. The only problem with that is that you are guaranteed to get all the phone calls in the future if they have problems with it. » www.pcmag.com/article2/0 ··· 0,00.asp |

A while ago I had to trouble shoot the same issue for a friend, and it turned out that their phone (also on 2.4GHz) interfered with Wi-Fi and as long as someone was talking on the phone wireless would be down. (I tried changing channels and increase Wi-Fi power to no avail) |

Look in device manager, network adopters, find your wireless card, properties, power settings. Uncheck "allow power to be turned off if idle..." |

said by Raible:Did you even read his post? Yes I did. Could be a number of things. a broken lease being one of them. Could be Router>Modem. Also could be a device issue. Considering that OP is doing this from a distance, 2nd hand, why not have more than a single item on his "check list" In the end it takes mere seconds to perform and the $$$ cost is $0. Have a great day |
