DSL availability

I checked the Verizon website and spoke to customer chat and it doesn't seem like DSL is offered in my area anymore. The customer rep said they had upgraded my location and they don't offer standard services anymore. But I know for a fact my house has never had FIOS, so did they mean that my neighborhood has been upgraded and they don't have copper lines anymore?

Am I out of luck if I want cheap DSL? Or should I look for another DSL provider?

If FiOS passes your house DSL is not available. However you can go through a CLEC such as DSL Extreme and get DSL service. Verizon will insist on you having FiOS installed just because it passes your house on the poles.

Thanks for the info. How do I find a clecl in my area? DSL extreme is not available. Zip code is 10602.

Try megapath , earthlink. Another question is have you ever had DSL at this location ? It may be to far out from the CO. One more thing was this area affected by hurricane sandy? If the copper passed through the CO that was destroyed by sandy it (the copper) has been cut off and is not functional. If this is the case your only options are FiOS or cable (if available).
