Recommendations for adding titles and subs to a video

I have to edit a video that has a large amount of on-screen text - sometimes there is as much text on-screen as a powerpoint presentation.

I need to replace this text (overlap existing) and also add subtitles.

I am looking for some software that is able to do this.

Pay software is fine - I don't need open source and free. I would prefer something with an easier learning curve if at all possible.

Subtitle files are just text files. There isn't any software that I'm aware that will take the audio track and create the file automatically. So you will need to make the file(s) from scratch. It's not hard, just time consuming.

I don't expect automatic, I just want something that works without dramas.

I don't want something that crashes, or is limited to text at the bottom of the screen.

For generated subtitle data to be used with video, go with "AegiSub". That's what the fansubbing community uses and it's well established.

AegiSub is not a video editor/processing program though, scrubbing out unwanted text already present will require a different program. You could use text elements to cover up undesired onscreen bits and then lay additional actual text on top of it, no need to alter the source video itself. AegiSub will generally write text files which can be played in conjunction with the main video file (as long as they share the same file name, many media players will auto-play the subtitles as well).

I haven't used AegiSub myself, so I have no familiarity with it's actual usage. What I'm familiar with is loading up already existing subtitle files and editing them in Notepad.
