Jitters during ping test

for the longest time I've been getting a 2-3 ms Jitters when performing a Ping test.
Not a clue what that means. I never did get jitters until my cable line got cut..
till this day Rogers still says I'm fine.

2-3 ms. jitter is fine. Pretty good, actually.

The cable jitter occurs because your cable modem has to request time on the upstream path in a free for all time period when all the modems with something to send jump up and down shouting ME ME! Then when they're heard they're given a time slot to send. If you miss in the free for all you have to wait until the next.

So the result is that it can take a while before you're allocated your upstream time slots.

Similarly, on downstream time windows are allocated to download to your modem up to the point where you get your advertised speed. So, again, your modem will have pauses between bursts of data.

This causes jitter.
