PeeWeePremium join:2001-10-21 Madera, CA | Question switch and IP address Does a computer connected to a switch that is not connected to the network still pick up an IP address from the switch itself? Or does the switch require connectivity before it can allocate an ip address? -- Iphone. Helping computer illiteracy become popular since 2007 |

 | The switch itself doesn't hand out IP addresses. That would be a DHCP server, whether that's handled by a router with that capability built-in, or from a standalone PC. You can assign a static IP address though. -- KI6RIT |

Then it is logical to assume that a PC getting an IP address is connected to the switch and the switch to a network in order to receive an IP address, correct? Although the allocated IP may be on the wrong vpn or connected to the wrong router. This being strictly DHCP. -- Iphone. Helping computer illiteracy become popular since 2007 |

1 recommendation | It depends on what IP you're seeing. If your PC comes up with a 169.254.x.x address then it is not finding a DHCP server so Windows assigns that one. |
