Re: [Internet] SB5120 TWC dropping internet connection constantl It'll be MUCH, MUCH quicker to get a new DOCSIS 3 modem (rental or purchased) then get the firmware for that modem updated. -- Start with what you can do, solutions will follow... |

 | Only your isp can update your modem software. Turn the modem off, or disconnect the AC power. Turn the modem on, or reconnect the AC power. The modem will automatically download the latest software from your Internet Service Provider. If you've done this and still have the same firmware that means it's the latest available for your area. |

That only works if the provider is set to check and update on modem connect. Most don't and TWC doesn't do that.
TWC does waves of updates 1-2 times a year to modems connected and online at that time, unless some critical update forces them to push it earlier. Looking around SB5120-2.19.0.17 seems to be the latest TWC has pushed for 5120s. -- Start with what you can do, solutions will follow... |

Result, lease a wifi-router-modem combo from TWC for $10.94/month or buy your own Modem and Router and take a chance of getting charged if it fails and TWC comes out to look at it.
The modem seems to be behaving for few hour. I'll keep my fingers crossed and wait and see. I'll keep you guy posted. No matter what happens, you guys have been great. |

since you've essentially given up anyway...
try changing the MAC on your PC to force your 5101 to get a new public IP from DNS.

i can't tell you how often TWCable allocates "stale" IP's and this gimmick fixes things. |

Huh? Changing the MAC on the PC won't force a new IP to his modem, which is a 5120 not a 5101. Besides, the modem is disconnecting. Changing the PC IP won't affect it.
Your network voodoo is pointless. Post a link that actually explains the science behind what you're trying to accomplish. At least explain what you think a "stale" IP is.

Just lease a normal modem (like your 5120 is) for a while, its a few bucks less a month that the combo router/modem with wifi. -- Start with what you can do, solutions will follow... |

Drew, getting a new IP does help - there is tons of anecdotal evidence of this all around the web. why? i don't know or care, i can only speculate.
i'm just giving something else for OP to try, that he may not have done already. |

There is tons of anecdotal evidence that Nigerian bankers need your help to recover some money and people didn't land on the moon. Doesn't mean it's right...
Might as well tell the OP to do a rain dance around the modem to make it work better. -- Start with what you can do, solutions will follow... |

My 5101 is working great - but that is not necessarily the same as the 5120 the OP has either... |

Changing a mac on your Ethernet card will get you a new IP if you are direct to modem. Cloning or editing your router's mac will get you a new IP. I don't recall ever having a real IP issue on dynamic service.. |

| I'm gonna give this MAC IP change a try. I'm having similar connectivity issues (random drops) but I'm using SB6141. Started on 9/22/2013. Very annoying. And I'm getting surges of correctables/uncorrectables. Modem rebooting due to T4 timeouts and SNMP |

DrDrewSo that others may surf. join:2009-01-28 SoCal kudos:10 | T timeouts and correctable/uncorrectable errors are classic signs of signal quality problems. Changing the MAC or IP won't fix that. -- Start with what you can do, solutions will follow... |

DSLR has signal crazy folks... I could basically have any signal I wanted and when my modem was -10, 52 transmit I didn't care, it didn't affect anything.. My modem will flux 5db on the receive, my drop is "bad"... I don't care.... I see no real service issues...
Signal, what the modem will show you ,what dslr has a wood for, is only one equation of many for real service reliability. |

Aceman join:2013-09-16 Plano, TX | Sorry, I had created this post for my sb5120 modem issues, but there a lot of stuff talked about here. I am new to the forum and I don't know how it works. Was I suppose to close this post or what? Just for my information.
My modem had not dropped in over 48hrs and then right around the time my internet dropped, I saw this in my router log today, can some one analyze and tell me what this means:
[DoS Attack: ACK Scan] from source: 107.14.36.105, port 80, Monday, September 30,2013 14:07:56
Thanks. |

| don't mind regulars here - we can get off on a tangent and hijack a thread a bit, but usually we all emerge the wiser for it.
i'm going thru similar misery with my sb5101u whenever my bandwidth utilization gets above 50% for around 10 minutes.
i'm going to try a new sb6141 by Wednesday, so i'll let you know here if it mattered.

OK, good news to whoever is still following this issue;
My new SB6141 is working on my 15/1 Standard service. details are 8/4 up/down bound channels (I'm thrilled I got 8 since most in my area only see 4 down), hardware v7 firmware 1.0.6.12 March 2013) Signal to Noise Ratio 39 dB, Power Level 8 dBmV.
I just beat the hell out of it with long torrent sessions at 90% capacity for an hour on and off my VPN and VM, and no matter what I do the modem will not reset, so it appears my old sb5101u could not keep up anymore with TWCable's docsis3 network upgrade cycle. I'm guessing it may have to do with their inability to push out firmware updates, not that my modem itself grew defective.
Last Result: »speedtest.nyc.rr.com/ from NYC/USA Download Speed: 16206 kbps (2025.8 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 1125 kbps (140.6 KB/sec transfer rate) Average Ping: 11ms (4 hops) packet loss is rare
bottom line if you have standard service and are debating to get a cheap used black(service OEM) docsis2 or a brand new whitebox(retail) docsis3, you may save yourself a lot of aggravation later if you just buy the better box now - i sure do wish I had. just to clarify - I did not gain any speed from the modem upgrade, only line stability and improved latency (fewer packets dropping and needing to be retransmitted). |
