| Just wanted to summarize this exciting new device type:
inductance-to-digital converter (LDC) designed specifically for inductive sensing applications. ... The LDC uniquely combines all of the external circuitry on chip that is normally required to simultaneously measure the impedance and resonant frequency of an LC resonator.
In addition to the many applications they mention, the LDC1000 could be used to simplify design of resonant mode power supplies. I have a few other applications where it could be used to reduce system cost.
TI has done an excellent job in announcing a final usable product rather than just the concept.
*** Back in 2008, HP announced a completely new type of electronic device, the memristor, which would have been very useful in some applications. I have to check what (if any) real products came out of that project.
Memristors can be used as simple switches that turn current off and on, acting something like the transistors used in todays computer chips. But unlike transistors, which are engineered to flip quickly between just two distinct states, memristors can easily be set to a range of different resistance levels. Whats more, once theyre set, they remember the resistance setting.
