[IA] 20 or 30?

I called in to Customer service about my bill and when they answered they said I was on the 30Mbit Prime Plus service. When I look at my account online and on the meter page, it still says I am on the MAX 20/2 service. Should I have 30Mbit service? I understand that it's "up to" and all that, but my service caps around 19Mbits most of the time, with peak time lows of 10 and off peak bursts of 22.

I'm still evaluating my options going forward, but I'd at least like to be able to get all that I'm currently paying for.

If you are still on the old Max service, then your speeds will be up to 20 Mbps.

I was under the impression there was no more grandfathering now that everyone was capped? If that's the case, why wasn't I moved to a current tier? I'm not under contract for the MAX service. I wonder how long I've been getting less bandwidth than I've really been paying for.

Sean, I was on Max since it first started. When this non sense began I had to switch plans. They did not do anything automatically.

Yep, I called in and they said, yep you can get more bandwidth for the same price, would you like to switch?

Can Chad or anyone else briefly explain the 20-30 language? Is 20 under the old tier and 30 the max download in digital markets?

20 is the old tier, 30 is the Prime Plus speed in most markets. Some markets still have the 20 down as the maximum possible speed but we are working to upgrade those markets to the new speed tiers.

Anyone in a Docsis 3.0 market will get upgraded to 30meg. Those left in Docsis 2.0 markets (we are literally talking a few hundred customers at most) will stay at 20meg because we just can't provide or promise 30meg. When those markets it upgraded we will make the change there as well.

Last 20/30 question; will I need a Docsis 3.0 modem to support Prime Plus or will it depend on the capacity of my subdivision?

When I gave the local office my address they suggested I could obtain any tier so I'm pretty sure I'll get close to the 30/2 levels.

Technically a D2 modem can do 30meg. There are two problems.

1. You are trying to get 100% of the bandwidth from a single QAM, making it much more difficult to do on a consistent basis compared to having access to multiple channels.

2. Many of the chipsets used in D2 modems don't have sustained throughput above 20-24meg based on our lab testing.

So my answer is yes, you need a D3 modem to get the best performance in Prime Plus.
