I would assume that is a speedtest on an ultimate connection. Here in metairie we are live and this is the speedtest on a premier connection.

Supposed to have?? I have no clue since these are all new speeds being rolled out, but I'm on the Ultimate tier, and prior to the upgrade my normal speed was 60/6. |
|
 | just about each tier now gets the speed of the tier above it. Premier tier now has the speeds that ultimate tier used to get. Ultimate tier is just about 3 times as fast, but with powerboost they are more like 4 times as fast. |
|
JDookie join:2005-04-29 New Orleans, LA | Speeds are actually all over the place so I'm thinking it's going to take a few days for everything to even out before it all finally settles to our real speeds. I am now seeing 60/18. This is fully expected for such an upgrade though so I'm not worried in the least. All I know is, it's an upgrade. |

That was what I wanted to know. Looks damned Ultimate to me. I'm sad with my 50/10 down here.
Enjoy. |

This is Preferred in the City Park area (not my house), and still on a Docsis 1.0 modem.

Damn, dude. Whoever that is needs a swap for a D3 modem. If that's not a official speed, they certainly aren't getting what they pay for |

Optimus2357Premium join:2010-11-21 West Warwick, RI kudos:3 | Yea, atleast get a D2 modem so your hardware capped. Though there are situations where D2 is a better fit then a D3. JMHO
Anyway, Im thrilled that you LA's got your upgrade. You guys have been wanting that for a long time. Congrats |

I did a couple quick speed tests to compare various hardware configurations on the Ultimate tier.
This is the speed of the Motorola SB6120 which only has 4 channel downstream bonding.
Currently hooked up to a Linksys E4200 running DD-WRT firmware:
Same modem, but now hooked up to a custom Pfsense Router:
I have a new Motorola SB6141 which I will get provisioned sometime tomorrow. That modem does 8 channel downstream bonding and I will post speed test with it once I get a chance. |

Interesting results, but be careful with your testing because I'm seeing extremely fluctuating download speeds on the Ultimate tier. I've seen anywhere from 250mbps to 30mbps download. Upload has been rock solid, but Download is a bit erratic at the moment.
Also, if possible, could you do a speed test when connected directly to the modem in addition to the router comparison?? |
|

1 recommendation | In each configuration I have done a couple speed test to confirm the results before I post. I know a couple people that have the big boy asus router that seems to be very popular among power users has been getting excellent results (meaning the router is not limiting the connection).
I hope to have sometime early this afternoon to get it done. |

1 recommendation | Yeah, I have one of those ASUS routers. I like it a LOT better than any of the current Linksys/Cisco routers, and I've had the best they have to offer as well. |

I finally had a chance to get my new SB6141 (8 CH bonding) modem provisioned on my account to replace my SB6120 (4 CH bonding). I had to get to the second tier of Cox HSI support to get the modem provisioned correctly as the first tier tech must have done something wrong. The modem when she had provisioned it would only show 4 downstream channel bonding, but the second tier tech removed the modem and re-provisioned and suddenly I had the proper 8 downstream channel bonding take place.
Interestingly enough the first tier tech upon realizing that I had the Ultimate tier service seemed to instantly want to pass me on to the second tier support. I wish I could reach second tier support that easily every time I needed to call cox for anything.
Running various speed test yesterday evening never got me into the 200 Mbps range even with the new modem or which router I used. I was even starting to wonder if my custom Pfsense firewall was miss-configured or the cause of me not hitting a test that showed 200+ Mbps. However this morning I ran a test and had promptly hit 235 Mbps.
Conclusion is that when network congestion is low power boost will really give you above and beyond speeds, but in the evening your connection will still consistently give you speeds that you are paying for relative to your tier. |
|
JDookie join:2005-04-29 New Orleans, LA | I'm getting the same results. 240-260mbps from early morning until 3pm, and then it degrades down to 140-160mbps for the rest of the evening/night.
Out of curiosity, are you seeing a performance increase going from the 6120 to the 6141?? |
|
 | I never did get a chance to test the 6120 early in the morning. I think that there would be maximum ceiling on the 6120 due to only being able to bond 4 downstream channels. The nice thing about the 6141 and it's 8 channel bonding is that the modem supports speeds into the 300 Mbps range so even though our current speeds might be reachable with the 6120, you have a better chance of reaching them with the 6141. Are you reaching those 200+ Mbps speeds on the 6120? |
|
JDookie join:2005-04-29 New Orleans, LA 1 edit | No, I was asking for my parents' house. They have a 6120 on the Preferred tier, and I was just wondering if there was any benefit to upgrading.
The 200+ speeds are at my house with the Cisco DPC-3010. |

I'm not really seeing the 200mbps+ speeds anymore. They must have tightened the belt on Powerboost or something.

Should I be concerned yet if I can't break through 28-32 mbps on a Premier plan ? Are the speed upgrades still being rolled out, or is it complete and I should be hitting 50? |

| You should be getting 60+mbps easy. Try resetting your modem.
What model modem do you have? What model router?
If you've got an older modem that's DOCSIS 2 or single-channel DOCSIS 3, then you may have to upgrade your modem. Some of the older routers are hitting their limits as well. |
