 | [Exede] disconnect finally I reached the point where the early termination fee was down to a reasonable level: 5 more month = $65.
Why my disconnect: while the Excede speed is marvelous (up to 20mbs) it is made useless by the monthly usage cap. My family of several active Internet users gobble up the cap on the first day of each month ! Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube ...
When I called to disconnect I was offered to upgrade to a cap of 25GB at $104/month ($25 off the normal rate). But that would give me the first 2 days of actual service each month...
Our area is now served by several wireless ISPs. With cell towers all around (even in areas one would consider "middle of nowhere") I can get fast speeds: e.g. 12mbs for $54.95 (no cap). And higher speeds are available: I was offered up to 100mbs. And the latency is unbelievable (in the teens). And that is not even LTE: there are at least 2 providers in our area (northern Illinois) that offer it.
Excede use while in "slow" mode is unusable: what we did on those days is to tether on to my sons Virgin Mobile cell phone: surprisingly worthwhile at $35/month.
Bottom line: Excede is only worthwhile in truly un-served areas. Before signing up with Excede anybody should truly search for alternatives. |

Good to hear something local works for you, but keep in mind physics is in control, number of users, and your ISP's Internet Pipe, of your speeds
I can assure you that paying for a 100 mbps Internet Pipe is not cheap, and I really doubt rural ISPs have got the bucks, if a consumer based service only.
Btw, reality check

I imagine that ViaSat would have preferred that you not post that information. Personally, I'm also tired of having to make do with 10 GB/month on my Exceed-o-meter. |

WiMax has been around for some time, but WiMax is not available to me, our house is just outside the service area (otherwise, I would not have selected Excede to begin with).
The technology use by our wireless ISP is something else (OFDM?): anyway the equipment that I have now would be able to give me 25mbs just via a software switch. To get higher speeds requires different equipment: the company that offered 100mbs is e-vergent.com. I did not ask for a quote, but I assume it is business class.
Anyway, 12mbs is fine for us: but what really counts is that there is no cap. Excede's combination of fast speed and low cap makes it so befuddling useless for me. |

I'm on my second month w/excede and although next month it's going to cost me $220.00 to cancel it, I think I will. For $60.00 a month I can't live like this.
I got them bundled with Direct TV which I'm very happy with.
Wish I would've found this forum before I signed up with them. |

Satellite internet is just not meant for people that want to download/upload a lot of data. If you need 25Gb of data every 2 days Raimundge, I am glad you are leaving Exede. That will at least leave some data for the rest of us. I can only imagine how much you used when the meter was turned off a few months ago or during the LNFZ...lol.
Unhappydudew...you just fell into the Direct TV sales trap (and you are not the only one). It sounds to me like you should have never signed up for Exede because you didn't understand its limitations. If you have other internet options that provide you unlimited usage (such as cable or DSL or wireless), that is what you should use and have stayed with. |

12 Mbps Download 3 Mbps Upload
At those monthly prices, for just 12 Mbps down, just think what a 100 Mbps hookup would cost, per month.
Btw, that's "commercial" broadband

Yes, one can watch a Netflix movie, but constant usage will get their attention, and those users will either get reduced speeds, or will be shown the 'door of opportunity' if their ways do not change. |
|
 | I don't have a problem with a cap on data usage. What is wrong with Excede is the gross mismatch of 20mbs speed and 10GB cap. |

Yes, I agree with your statement: "Satellite internet is just not meant for people that want to download/upload a lot of data."
Maybe Excede should state that clearly in their ads !
And if you need just basic, everyday email, light web browsing, etc. then cell-based access is a better deal, e.g. Virgin Mobile LTE 4G for $35/month. |

Question is, how big is the "penalty box" after exceeding 2.5GB/month?
Myself, I prefer to pay a flat monthly fee...with kids in the house, Virgin Mobile might be making a fistful of dollars, off of those kids.
"All plans include 2.5GB/month of high speed data..."

I agree Raimund that Exede's ads can be misleading. They are "selling" the speed with no mention of the severe usage limitations that satellite internet has on it. For a person to subscribe to it simply for the speed is wrong. There are more factors to condsider, mainly latency and data cap levels.
I also agree that mobile broadband can be a better deal for some people. I actually have both Exede and mobile broadband. If I could get 4G at home I probably would go with it and drop Exede. Alas, no 4G where I live...only when at work or traveling. |
