| [AB] How Far would Shaw go with fiber Hey everyone,
Im looking at a rural property roughly 4km for a shaw serviced area. Would shaw be willing to connect the property up and also what would the cost be? Im looking at around 75k in the bank for this project...
If someone has another company or a site i can get more information from PM it to me.
Thanks |

I remember one of my previous employers trying to get coax services to his bay in a business park (in Calgary, not far from shaw's North office at the time) and it was going to cost in the 10's of thousands to get hooked up. Never did happen.
If you're looking for the latter: »www.shaw.ca/business/builders/ (even if you're not a new development, I imagine it would be the same people that you need to talk to).
If the former: »www.shaw.ca/Business/Data-Services/ |

I was just poking around to see if anyone had spoken to shaw about doing this recently. |

Might be who you need to talk to, but for residental service, after you paying for the installation, try talking to Corbin, he might know who you need to talk to -- Yes, I am not employed and looking for IT work. Have passport, will travel. |

Shaw modem connected to wireless bridge in town, and then other end at your place -- Yes, I am not employed and looking for IT work. Have passport, will travel. |

You're probably thinking of Terego... I have also only heard bad things about them.
Are you looking for someone to install a 4km stretch of dark fiber for you (ie, to connect two sites) or are you looking for fiber internet service to a specific location... which just happens to be 4km from a Shaw serviced area? |
|

Fiber internet to a location.
Kevin I never thought of Point to Point to be honest... |

If you are considering it, try and get 3.5 GHz... No matter the frequency, it takes a bit of planning/work to get setup.
Just another option, if you want internet only, TV service using that method woud take just a tad bit more work -- Yes, I am not employed and looking for IT work. Have passport, will travel. |

My question is where would I put the end point in town? I have no idea where I could do it... |

Haha,
Well I got a guestimate back for this project.....
1.15 Million for copper 1.2-1.4 million for fiber
Yeah thats not gonna happen. LOL |

Running the line isn't hard, it's convincing someone to terminate on either end. They usually won't as you took all the gravy money away from them by pulling the line yourself. |
|
Doonz join:2010-11-27 Beaumont, AB | Well, The materials are under 100k. BUt laying the line underground seems to be the high cost. |
|
 | A lot of legal right of way issues |

Corbin,
I'm gonna assume that you may have seen the email come through.
What right of way issues? Is shaw not able to lay lines in the utility corridors? Or are you talking about from the plant site? Im not sure where the plant site is if its in Beaumont or Nisku where the line would have to be run from.
I was hoping that Shaw woulda been able to tap into the east edge of beaumont follow TWP 505 east which has power gas and phone ran in the ditch already.
If you know more could you elaborate in here? |

 | Ah no, these sorts of these definitely don't cross my desk :P.

4 km of line is no small job. It's not just running some coax or fiber in a trench and calling it a day. 4km is a major extension of the plant, requiring many other pieces of equipment to make it work.
Right of way issues can certainly be a factor as Shaw typically leases space from a third party, and in some cases requires that third party to pull the lines. -- "All opinions stated by me are solely my views and do not reflect the views of my employer, this site, or even myself depending on my level of sanity at the moment" |

| Yeah but material is only 10% of cost. Paying a directional driller is not 800k for 4miles.
I know what the actual cost is of fiber so thats a non issue. Im trying to figure out where the plant location is. |

| I think the job would beyond just connecting a 4km fiber up to the existing plant. Is there dark fiber or spare wavelengths in a dwdm band back to the headend. Sounds like your farm is far from town? The radio point-to-point sounds like the best solution, especially with the 75k budget. |
