Nvidia driver and wow

So 3 days ago i updated all my audio and graphics drivers and then optimized the settings. Since then, my computer freezes (usually when playing wow) to the point that i cant even hit the power button on the pc to restart. I end up having to pull out the power plug to get the comp to reboot. Since i never had a problem before im assuming there was a problem with updating the driver. I went back to drivers and did a clean update so that it would replace all the old files. Now there is a white block that i cant get rid of on my desktop and wow seems to run really slow.

Wow worked completely fine before so i was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this and if there was a way to simply revert back to my prior driver settings. Im at work right now but I can get computer specs tonight if needed.

Yep been there done that. Assuming you are on a Win7 platform. If your PC is a Dell\HP or other manufacture make sure to use the driver they supply. There are some registry settings that will change the fail on delay Win7 has and some other power management settings that you can try. (Dont remember all of them.) The basic idea is to make sure Win7 is not trying to lower power to the card to and to disable the reset of the driver if Win7 detects and issue.

In the end and lots of trial and error I resolved mine by rolling the driver back to a known good driver. Since then I have not updated and problem has gone away. When a new driver is released I try it out and if it crashes I roll back.

I even tried reloading Win7 from scratch and replacing the video card. It could be a heat issue so it would be worth while to download a monitor to see what temp the card gets to.

Found some of my old links and paths I went down. Might help might not. First thing would be to try the old driver that was working.

Thanks! I use EVGA precision temp monitor. I didnt realize updating my driver could cause so many issues. Ill just restore to prior driver. I thought i was doing something wrong. Appreciate the help.

It is not that difficult to install a new driver but it can sometimes be difficult to remove all traces of your old driver.

The easiest way to do this would be to use a program designed for the purpose. Something like driver fusion could work:

The above app is freeware so be careful when installing it that you do not select unnecessary toolsbars, etc. to be installed.

Run that, then install the latest Nvidia reference driver.

I'm not sure what card you're using, but all of my Nvidia machines are running 314.22 and work great with WoW. I tried 320.49, but found it to be crappy. I haven't tried anything newer than that yet.

It definitely sounds like there's remnants of files from the different driver installs. I'd check out the utility Goldheart See Profile posted.
