Rogers Wireless Stick Internet Monthly Plan?

Im looking to get a wireless stick for internet for my laptop. My wifi is really bad in my apartment. I will be moving to another apartment in less than 2 weeks and that apartment i know has very fast and reliable internet. Im an american that relocated to canada for a few months and got here a few weeks ago. I checked the rogers site and it cost 170 before tax if you dont want the 2 year agreement and just want the monthly plan. However, i know for rogers, there are a ton of hidden costs and i like to know about it.

First off, i read that if you have this wireless stick, it cost $15 to activate. Is this true or false? Then depending how much mb you use per month, it shows this on the website.

Flex Rate Plans

For Rocket™ stick, mobile hotspot, or Rocket built-in

Do your internet needs change from month to month? Each month the Rogers Flex Rate Plan begins at the lowest tier then automatically adjusts based on your actual usage, offering flexibility and savings on potential overage rates.

MONTHLY SERVICE FEE† Wireless Internet Included
$5.00/mo 10 MB

If usage is greater than 10 MB, the next tier will be charged
$10.00/mo 100 MB

If usage is greater than 100 MB, the next tier will be charged
$20.00/mo 500 MB

If usage is greater than 500 MB, the next tier will be charged
$40.00/mo 5 GB

If usage is greater than 5 GB, $10 per additional GB will be charged*
Features Included
3 email addresses3
Rogers Online Protection security suite
Available on a monthly year term.
† Includes all monthly fees.
* If you exceed the amount of data included in your plan, it will be charged in $10 increments.

I know this is for the monthly plans. If you choose the 2 year plan you can get the stick 29.99 but you have to pay more for it.

For someone that needs this as a backup internet for the laptop, assuming you use up 90mb for the month. That means you are charged 10 CAD for the month. I know canadian tax is 15% so 1.50 cad here for 11.50 total. But i also read rogers has hidden fees that they don't advertise such as a 6.95 fee for something else and then another 0.50 fee for emergency calls? Is this true? So if you use 90mb per month its basically $19.25/month? So if you don't even use any mb or use between 0 and 10mb, then its 5 CAD plus 0.75CAD so 5.75 CAD but then you hae to add the 7.45 CAD for other taxes and thus its 13.20 CAD?

Is this about right? I would like to know from someone who has used rogers wireless stick before. Also, how is the connection? Is it pretty reliable?

Would it be better going this route as oppose to getting a koodo phone and then getting a data plan? The thing is i have zero use for a cell phone as i already have a landline. So if i get a smartphone only use is tethering internet so that means the rocket stick is better?

Also is it true that there are lot of overages? I read online that many ppl said they didn't even download much etc but then they got billed for over 100 dollars per month and being told they used over 10gb when they never watched any youtube or used any site at all.

I also heard that other companies in canada are telus and bell but they don't seem to offer monthly plans? I need backup internet b/c my wifi at my apartment is really bad and disconnect a lot. I also want to have backup internet in the other apartment i move to just in case the internet goes down. this place im at uses wifi and so does the other one.

Im planning to be here for another 2 month-5 month so i would want a backup internet that is very very reliable. Thank you.

There are no hidden fees with the monthly plans.

There is a one time connection fee of $15 to setup the service.

Taxes vary depending on the province

Be aware this is a postpaid service so a credit check is required, and since you won't have any Canadian credit history you'll likely be required to pay a deposit to have the service activated. Rogers can run a US credit check for you but it can take several days to get you up an running.

Bell and Telus also offer plans that are identical. I would choose a provider based on coverage. Ask people who live around you who they use for their cell phone provider and ask if they have any coverage issues.

Im in montreal. I spoke to someone on rogers on the phone and they said its just 15 percent tax. So basically it will cost 10cad plus 1.5 which is 11.5 per month only if between 10mb and 100mb and just 23 a month up to 500mb?

So there is no way i can get the internet right on the spot and there has to be credit check? I have zero credit problems, always paid my credit card on time in the usa.

I dont know anyone here in montreal... thats my problem...

By paying a deposit, i get that back later on right? Is it like security deposit?

Yep you're correct on the math.

Your credit history does not carry over here. You can have them run a credit check with the US bureaus but they won't be able to activate you right away. Any deposit you pay is returned to you after 12 months of consecutive on time payments or when you cancel your service, whichever comes first.

Virgin Mobile also has prepaid plans for the internet stick as well. They charge a flat rate of $35 a month for 1GB.

If you're not sure about who has good coverage you can try out Rogers for 15 days and cancel and return the product if it doesn't work out. You do have to pay for any usage you incur while the service was active.

Hello. Heres the thing. Im only going to be in montreal for another 2-5 months. I can't stay here any longer b/c im a us citizen. So thats one of the reason i want a month to month plan. In the usa, i used virgin mobile for my smartphone and its great b/c its month to month and cancel anytime.

How much is this deposit i have to pay? So if im using it for 3 month and then cancel, then i would get my deposit back at that time? Im confused but these deposits are paid by credit card right? The thing is i only have bank of montreal atm card, its not even a debit/credit card b/c there is no expiration. I of course have american debit/credit card.

So that mean they only accept my us debit/credit card then?

Do you know approximiately how long it would take for them to activate me? The thing is i only really need the back up internet for about 11 days. Because after that, im moving to another apartment that has very fast and reliable internet so im pretty sure i wont need the stick anymore, though of course keeping it as a backup. its just my wifi in my current apartment is just atrocious and i need to be online and cannot disconnects...

Because if it takes like 1 week, then i probably won't bother with this. Another thing is i sign up for a phone plan such as koodo with the data plan to tether internet, would i still have to go thorough this credit check like with rogers?

I have the Rocket Stick (paid nothing for it, btw) -- it's the new LTE one that I have.

There IS a hidden fee. But it's not huge ($1.81). This is my bill:

Wind also has hotspots that you can buy, not sure how well it works in the location you're going to. But Rogers would be decent quality.

where in canada are you from? i read about wind but isn't that not available in montreal?

Is this the rogers stick you have?

The sierra wireless aircard 330u lte?

How did you get it no cost?

Okay so looking at your bill, that is how much it cost you per month assuming you don't go over 10mb for the month right? And whenever you did went over 10mlb but less than 100mb, you would be charged 10 cad only plus those taxes?

This is an old plan, hence why there is a government regulatory recovery fee. The current plans do not have this fee.

If a deposit is required corporately owned Rogers stores will accept cash/debit/credit card for deposits. Dealers are typically the same, but some only accept credit card.

Deposits are released upon cancellation in the form of a cheque. Be aware it can take up to a month for the cheque to be sent out.

If you opt not to have them run a US credit check they can get you up and running in 20 minutes.

Koodo will also do credit checks if you're opting for postpaid service. Pretty much every provider does credit checks if you're opting for postpaid.

Don't remember it's been a very long time now. The reason why your plan may still have it as it's a retention/loyalty plan that's likely been in the system since before they got rid of the fee.

Im bit confused. So if i sign up for rogers, will my bill have the hidden fees that i hear ppl are talking about or will it be like how apple guy bill is? I kept hearing a few ppl mention there is a 6.95 maintenance fee and another .50 fee for emergency calls?

So would a $10 monthly charge, lets say i use up to 100mb only for the month. Tax is 15 percent so would my monthly fee with rogers be 11.50 CAD only or will it include those 1.80 charges or will it include that and another 7.45 in taxes...?

It will not have any other fees. As indicated earlier, AppleGuy is being charged the additional $1.81 because he is on an older plan where additional fees were tacked on. All plans available from Rogers today do not have any additional fees.

yyzlhr said there is no longer that recovery fee, so it might not even exist...i might be on some legacy plan, though I am unsure why, since it was signed this year. whatever the case, it's not $7 like it used to be. So likely it would be $10 plus tax for 100mb. That's $11.50...nothing else. If you get more services, you'll get a bundled discount, which is what I get. (8% off)

There will be no 911 fee since you're on the net.
