 | [BC] About to get Shaw BB 100, Any Tips? So I rent a place and my landlord just switched to some crappy Telus 3 Mbps connection. I've decided i'm going to go all out and get a Shaw BB 100 connection since all I basically spend all day on the internet and do a lot of streaming + gaming. Any tips? Worth it? Any deals?

worth it? yes if your node does not have congestion, which seems to be fairly rare in vancouver, so i would call shaw and ask about how congested the node is at the address your looking to get the services at before hand.
any deals? there was a bb100 promo a bit ago but i believe it is gone now, u should call in and ask to double check but if not i recommend starting with bb50 and the promo deal, once the bb50 promo is up for you i would switch to bb100, thats what i did
Any tips? if your a streamer and a gamer then like me you rely on a consistent connection with low latency (ping), if telus has there 25 or 50 services available in your area, i highly recommend going with them as they are much more consistent then shaw, for streaming and gaming the telus 50/10 has much more upload then the shaw 100/5 or 50/3, and you probably dont need to much more then 50mbps, but what i dont recommend is going with a telus service below the 25mbps or a telus service with loop bonding, a single line will always have better pings then a loop bonded one -- Shaw Broadband 100/5 - Cisco DPC3825 - Asus RT-AC66U |

Tips: Have the modem bridged and use your own router. |

Make sure your router is a modern powerful one too, with gigabit network ports. You'll probably have to upgrade to gigabit as well.
No lame WRT54G's here - your router should be able to do at least 200Mbps both ways. High end routers are able to do 900+Mbps which gives you plenty of headroom.
Also, make sure it supports QoS as you need to implement upload prioritization so your gaming packets get #1 priority when avoiding the huge buffers in the modem. |
