[IA] Data Caps - How much do you really use?

As you might know, Mediacom has put a cap on all of their home high speed data users. I have seen a lot of rants & raves about this, so it got me wondering...

What is your data cap, and how much do you REALLY use?

you can check your cap & usage here: »www.mediacomtoday.com/usagemeter/index.php

Click on "Past 3 Months" and see what you get

I have a 250G cap, and used 28.3G last month.

Not on Mediacom but figured i'd chime in on the general topic.

Since it being summer time the past months I haven't watch many shows but in general I use about 10-15GB/day. With fall starting up and all the shows that comes with that plus the regular downloading (patches, testing software and such) that will head closer to 20GB/day which makes it closer to ~600GB/month. In general I do lots of little PC fixes so first thing I do is download updates for them. I also stream music pretty much from the time I go to bed till I go to sleep during this time unless i'm watching shows which is streaming also.

So yeah, I wouldn't be impacted by the caps (have 100Mbps tier) but I still don't like them eitherway

Anywhere from 150-350gb with two of us in the apartment. Comparing Mediacom's meter with my routers dd-wrt meter both showed the same amount of data last month, which actually surprised me.

My cap is 250 GB. There are three users in the house, but the last two months we've only used 75 GB and 45 GB. We don't do much of any streaming.

On the Launch/Intro tier, so 150GB cap. I recall last May it was approx. 40 GB and June was 80-something before they reset the meter. The last billing period (ending August 28) was 88 GB. This month, two-thirds the way through the billing period, and we are only at 40 GB. The high two to three months this summer were due to my younger son being home for a couple of months (he streams a fair bunch), as well as overlapping with my daughter's (who is also at home) annual four-month "binge" on Netflix where she pays for a few months each year to get caught up on the all the episodes she missed since the last summer, and then drops her payments again. My wife and I otherwise don't stream. ADDED: Both of my kids are adults out of college.

I have 2 adults and 2 children under 10 and we are on a 250 cap. We are hitting about 235 gb per month but the kid stream a lot of netflix and so do I.

500-600 gb a month. have had months higher, and lower, but those are about average.

We use 125-160GB, that is up from 6 months ago where we averaged 70-80GB. This makes usage creep extremely concerning.

I have a 250. Last month, because I made sure my iTunes shows were all downloaded before my caps set in, I was a fraction of a percent away.

I would have LOVED to see previous usage so I'd have a better idea (I never looked at it much as I thought I would stay grandfathered as they said). I do seem to recall going over one month, but I *think* I'm usually within it (I guess I'll find out…)

I stream everything since our cable sucked and I dumped it last year (or I watch antenna as even it's better than our cable was…). I guess in the major TV season (like what's coming up) I'll be randomly getting the $10 penalty, but it's cheaper than signing up for a faster plan just to get more space (which is what they're pushing rather heavily now).

Well by just looking at the following posts...not sure what everyone's plan is but it looks like most of us fall or are close to that 3% they speak of Out of 30 months of having 350gb limit I would have gone over for 3 months.

Most of the reason it looks like is "streaming" Now why would mediacom ever sign up for the free netflix open connect service they would lose all the overdata charge...I guess they would still count it as data even if its just on their network. If thats the case why wouldn't they even more? Super-HD = more bandwidth but not external off mediacom's network. They would make more money and save on bandwidth...

That's what I was wondering. I think more people are at or over the caps than they are admitting. With the future of streaming video looking bright, it's only going to get worse (for us, not Mediacom).

With one PC it was 165. Added a laptop and it spiked to 299. kept it around 240 last few months. Bought a Roku3 and stream Netflix a lot. The 250 cap isn't going to cut the mustard. The minimum after 10-2 will be 350.

But you don't have to put up with Mediacom in North Liberty. There is competition there and I am pretty sure they offer SuperHD.

One guy got a letter after using 77TB on a residential account. A friend of mine uses between 12 - 20 TB a month and never received a letter. In reality all ISP's have a cap, if anyone uses too much they will be notified.. Caps are put into place for money reasons as everyone knows. The first thing that happens is everyone goes into panic mode and moves up to a higher cap costing more money. All isp's want too save their TV revenue , people are realizing they don't need HBO, Cin, Showtime etc, or in many cases TV at all.. The caps put a stop too that, isp's don't care that some people are on a fixed income, are disabled and depend on a computer to keep busy or watch videos.. You would think that Netflix and video companies like that would put up a big stink about caps, I see no evidence they do. The thing that bothers me is instead of having caps, they should just email you too slowdown instead of forcing people too pay more money for higher caps, not just here, most isp's say pay more money and you have a higher cap..

Not to stir the pot, but....

»support.netflix.com/en/node/87

Manage Bandwidth Usage

If you are interested in setting a limit on how much data our service will use, you can adjust your video quality setting. Navigate to Netflix.com/VideoQuality to manage the amount of data you use when playing movies and TV shows on Netflix.

There are 3 settings to choose from:

Good quality (uses up to 0.3 GB per hour)
Better quality (uses up to 0.7 GB per hour)
Best quality (uses up to 1 GB per hour, up to 2.8 GB per hour if watching HD, or up to 4.7 GB per hour if watching 3D)

See our Internet Connection Speed Recommendations for more information about how fast your connection must be to stream in each quality level.

Mediacom got those caps implemented just in time since now everyone has SuperHD including Mediacom customers.
