kudos:20 | Exact speeds possible vary primarily depending on your distance to the nearest DSLAM - a piece of equipment which is usually housed in a Central Office (a large building owned by the local telephone company) or Remote Terminal (a smaller unit out on the street, sort of like a cellphone signal booster tower). The closer you are to the DSLAM in question, the better your connectivity. Anything over about four miles is usually too far for DSL service, so as you can imagine your precise location makes a big difference.
