Re: [DSL] SmartRG Bridge Mode

I don't have one in front of me unfortunately so going from memory, please excuse any minor deviations. When you go into the WAN config you'll see an existing entry for the PPPoE interface. Click on the checkbox and Delete, then create a new entry and pick the option that isn't PPPoE (I don't recall the specific option, but it's relatively obvious), it should default the vlan to 35, if not, do so. Save, and that should be it. If you get stuck let me know and I'll pull some step-by-step screenshots tomorrow.

I had an SR50N in my hands today (I suppose it's really my own, since I paid for it). But since that installation is tomorrow, I refrained from taking it away and checking it out. Tomorrow I expect to have another one, and I will have it for over a week before its Install. So I'll be able to check it out thoroughly. (I've steered 2 friends to Start thus far, although I'm still with Bell myself. )

It ended up asking for a link level 2 device - I chose atm at first, but couldn't get that to work. I then tried ptm. After farting around a bit, it finally worked by setting the first 802.1p setting to "0" (could choose between 0 and 7) and the second VLAN ID to 35.

Yes, 802.1p, thanks - couldn't remember off hand what the two options were. Glad you got it working, if you need anything else just let me know.

I'm curious.

It doesn't appear firmware updates are available for this unit. Do you know if that will change? Or is that something that consumers can't do with this unit? Do you and/or other ISPs retain the ability to update this unit's firmware remotely?

It is pretty unlikely that Bell will push firmware on behalf of third party providers. That said, end users can generally apply DSL firmware updates, so it isn't a fundamental problem the way it is with cable modems.

Maybe they just haven't released a new firmware for this unit?

That's my understanding. But I've asked for clarification as well.

I just spent an hour trying to get this new modem into bridge mode with no success. Used the settings as indicated in the thread but could not get my router to connect over PPPoE... help?

Can you get a PPP session in "non-bridge" mode?
Are you trying to get a PPP session from what? Computer (which)? Router (which)?
Are you syncing xDSL?
What seems to be the problem, as you perceive it?

Yes, non-bridge mode works fine.

I'm trying to use my router (Netgear WNDR3700 running DDWRT) to initiate the PPPoE session. It had been working fine through the old Bell modem's "bridge" mode.

Not sure if xDSL is syncing, is that indicated by a LED on the unit or a screen in the admin UI I've missed?

I've tried creating the bridge WAN using the default settings -1 & -1, 0 & 35, 1 & 35 and each time the router can't connect and get an WAN IP address... Was late last night and haven't had a chance to look through the router logs to see if there are any clues... Switched back to the Bell modem until I can resolve this...

Are you on a VDSL2 connection plan? Here is my guess. If SmartRG's bridge mode is really pure bridge mode then your router has to support IEEE 802.1Q (vlan tagging) which is a Bell network requirement. You'll not be able to pass even PPPoE authentication otherwise.

Yes, a 25/10 connection.

I believe DDWRT on a netgear 3700 supports vlan tagging and 802.1Q. At least there are a lot of settings that mention these things. I tried many different configurations tonight, with no success. Their wiki is not terribly complete, at least for my router, the UI is different than some articles I've found suggest for setting this up. And of course, it could very well be that this feature is simply buggy in my build of DDWRT.

I suppose I could just use the built in router, but the idea of rebuilding my networking config again is not appealing. Upload speeds are great, but I really miss the days of good old dumb modems that you could just plug into a router and go...

I tryed two Bell HTTn VDSL lines (Ikanos) in GTA to test with Smart RG SR505N but no success. It seems not able to sync. Do you know what's the reason?

Does this modem require Bell to update the profile to make it working? Or the CPE setting problem?

I use PTM path 0, 0/35, PPPoE, NAT enabled, VDSL2, 12a. The rest settings keep default or removed unused DSL settings (Modulations and profiles).

What about if you reset it back to it's defaults? Also make sure that you have the VDSL signal on the centre pair. Ie, I think the Sagemcom checks both pairs.

Tried defaults, no luck. The same result, no sync.
By default, VLAN 802.1p=N/A, VLANMuxId=N/A. It doesn't allow to change them.
Also tried inner pair and outer pair, no difference.
Two test lines at different locations work perfect with Sagemcom f@st 2864.

Any further suggestions?

Why not try to set up a PPP session from the "PC" first?

Set the Modem up as follows:

Advanced Setup > WAN Service

(Remove the PPPoE interface, then ...)

[Add]

"Wan Service Interface Configuration"
Select ptm0/(0_1_1)
[Next]

"WAN Service Configuration"
Select WAN service type: Bridging
Enter 802.1P Priority ...... [1]
Enter 802.1Q, VLAN ID ... [35]
[Next]

[Save/Apply]

Thanks for your help! Actually tried bridging before and tested again this morning, it still didn't get sync.

Could you help to check the software version to see if it was the same as yours or Rocca's:
2.5.0.2013:0x:xx:xx:03:48_x.xxL.08.A2pxxFxxxx.d24j

If it was firmware, I may try to upgrade it. Otherwise it could be the profile reason at Bell's side.
