Video Card Questions

I had to replace my GeForce 7600GS 256 MB DDR Video card because the caps blew up and it quit working. So I replaced it with a GeForce 210 1024 MB DDR3 video card (it was on sale).

I've been working on the computer all evening, and really haven't seen any improvement at all, everything works as it did before the old video card quit working. So, the new card has 4 times the memory, and supposedly a faster graphics processor. So, other than being able to see what I'm doing again, what will I get with all this video memory and faster processor?

The monitor is an HP 2011x connected via DVI.

Unless you do any real gaming or use any programs that use the gpu for number crunching like some distributed computing programs you wont see any difference.

Oh well, I do very little of that.

Thanks

Probably good you only spent $30 on a new card if you don't.

Wow, you must be psychic, I bought the card locally, and with tax, it came to $29.96.

Although, I can't help but wonder, with all that memory and processing power on this new card, that they haven't figured out a way to offload some of the "standard" work the cpu does onto the gpu. For some reason, it bothers me that this new video card has more memory and a faster processor than my old one, and it's just sitting there doing very little.

I knew better than to purchase the $200 video card that the salesperson was trying to steer me to, but it's disappointing to find out that even that card would make no noticeable improvements over the 5 year old video card I originally had with the work I normally do.

Some programs do. GPUs and CPUs are still very different, so it's hard to just flip a switch and have it work like that. That's where technologies like CUDA, DirectCompute, and OpenCL come in. There's been a push in that direction, but we're not quite there yet.

The new card should use less power than the old one, so there's at least that.

You actually expected a video card to make everything better, and you only spent $30? Besides the 210 was pathetic when it came out years ago, and it never was a gaming card. The nvidia 610 through 640 are not gaming cards either, and should only be uses on systems if they don't have onboard, the onboard is really outdated, otherwise don't provide the video connections you need on the motherboard.

Quite a few programs do use the gpu these days, but most people will only see possibly video players, their browser, and flash actually using it.

To put it bluntly, this link runs smoothly on a cheap nvidia 620 which is definitely not a gaming card, and still costs more than $30. You need at least Chrome, or Firefox to do this with hardware acceleration enabled.

I actually expected some improvement over the GeForce 7600GS that I had in there originally simply because it's a newer card with 4 times more memory. I'll confess right now that I'm not, and probably never will be, a gamer, and until now, never gave much thought to video cards. However, my logic is this, ignoring the gpu for the moment, if a card with 256 MB of video memory is going to work just as well as a card with 1024 MB, then why do they bother sticking that much memory onto the card?

BTW: Love that link, have to watch it again after I take my pain meds.

VRAM is absolutely useless, if you aren't even utilizing any of it. You could drop a GTX Titan in your system with 6gb of GDDR5, and it wouldn't make a one bit a difference if all you're doing is browsing the web. It's nothing more than an expensive paper weight at that point.

Until you start gaming, or heavy video editing, you aren't going to notice any difference in performance simply because you now have 768mb more VRAM.

this is a good link to do Nvidia comparisons

While the 210 has more memory, and a higher GPU clock, it has less buss bandwidth and a less capable core config.
