[DSL] Bring-Your-Own-Modem CellPipe: TSI to Ebox?

HI There, I am currently a unsatisfied TSI VDSL customer with the 25/7 package in Montreal, on a CellPipe modem. I have been wanting to switch to EBox for a few months now, but have been blocked by various issues. I do not want to be forced into getting a new modem ( Sagemcom ) with Ebox, and want to purchase my CellPig from TSI and switch to Ebox. I have called and emailed Ebox support, and told they do not support any modem ( now ) then the Sagemcom.

Can someone tell me how soon this support might be available? I really want to switch to EBox soon, for various reasons, but do NOT want the Sagemcom modem if I can help it. The CellPig has been very reliable for me for over a year with TSI, and I don't want to switch it.

Thanks, Stefan in LaSalle, Montreal.

Hi chex383,

I was a VDSL 25/10 consumer with TSI on a CellPipe modem for a while, but I now am with EB on the VDSL 25/10 package on a Sagemcom modem.

I got to be honest, I have not noticed a difference in terms of speed or reliability between both modems. I still have the CellPipe though, as its taking forever for Bell to send me a return box, but last time I tested, the CellPipe was working fine with EB.

I do have a question though, since you want to buy the CellPipe and that both are likely to to be priced in a similar range, why not buy the Sagemcom? Why are you so attached to the CellPipe?

Cheers.

Sorry we require the sagemcom to place an order at the moment and there are no ETA.

Can you also tell us why you are are not satisfied with TSI? If its because the service does not work as advertised I highly recommend on looking at cable instead of Vdsl. If you are unsatisfied for administrative reason's then feel free to take this plan.

Hello:

The reason I don't want to switch to the Sagemecom modem is for the below reason. I was told by a Ebox support rep that they have had no issues with the 'sync-no-surf' issues with the Sage. modem, but I think the below post shows this is not true. I would like not have my modem put into interleave mode, which increases the latency of my last-hop ping times, if possible.

However, if push comes to shove, and its the only way I can get EBOx VDSL, than I will make the switch.

»sync-no-surf fix

Issues with TSI: I have a number of reasons I want to switch away, which are:

Work VPN routing: I do a lot of work from home to my company, which the VPN point/datacenter is on the South Shore of Montreal, about 10 kms away from my apartment. My routing over TSI to our network goes thru Europe, and comes back again, causing a latency of about 150ms to any of the servers in our network. I have spend several hours with TSI support, they pointed me to upstream Internet Provider HE.net, (Hurricane Electric) and I worked with them, and they basically said they couldn't do anything to fix the problem. They have one peering point between HE.net and continent8.net ( my companies upstream provider) and it is Europe. When I do traceroute/ping tests with Ebox, my connectivity to work is perfect, it never leaves the Montreal area.

IP sourced in Toronto: all my IP traffic with TSI flows thru 151 Front street in Toronto. I hate that any local connections I make in Montreal, goes from Toronto and comes back to Montreal. With Ebox, everything will be based out of the Canix building on Rene-LeVesque in downtown Montreal, making for great latency. My co-workers on Ebox in Montreal get 10ms or less ping times to our datacenter on the South Shore.

There are other reasons I want to switch away from Teksavvy, but I won’t get into here. PLus I like Ebox service a lot from other people I know in Montreal who have them. Also the price of my service would be lower, and I get a longer ‘unlimited’ data transfer window than TSI.

====

Cable internet: No, I hate cable internet, and do not want Videotron cable. I had cable a couple of times over the years in Boston, with Cablevision, and Comcast, and I had nothing but problems. I hate the shared medium of cable, and just find it to be less reliable than DSL, in general. I am very happy with my bell.ca. VDSL service, and want to stay with it.

I hope this helps explain my situation.

Before taking your final decision, do your research. Vidéotron network is one of the best trouble free network for an IISP.

Look at reviews on Acanac who has the worst reputation. People are complaining on Bell DSL/VDSL and Rogers cable connections rarely on Vidéotron cable connections.

Eric from Ebox already told you that he highly recommends on looking cable instead of VDSL even if a Vidéotron connection cost them 2031$/100Mbps compare to a Bell connection that cost them 1032$/100Mbps. Why? They save a lot on support for a client on Vidéotron network.

I agree with LanAdmin. Here in Quebec, cable has always been more stable than ADSL and VDSL. There was a time when I was working for a computer repair company and we were constantly getting calls at least 3 times a week from clients who had lost their internet connection those were 100% of the time with ADSL (bell). I have been on cable for more than 10 years and in that 10 years we lost the internet about 3 ou 4 times and 2 of those 4 times because of thunderstorms or other factors not being the Internet provider. Videotron network is one of the best in term of stability around here and like LanAdmin says VDSL and ADSL high speeds are not available everywhere. In my neighbour the fastest speed you can get is 7 mbit/s. This neighbour is not new(20+ years) and I live in one of the 5 biggest city in the province of Quebec. The only companys to offer high speed internet ( 15+Mbits ) are those on cable.

Well, there is no way I am doing cable w/o trying to install VDSL first. My DSL with TSI is working, installed properly in my bedroom, and I don't want to change anything with my physical setup. If I go with Videotron cable, they will have to run a new cable and drill a hole in my outside bedroom wall in my aprtment, to install the Cable modem in my bedroom, where all my computers are, as my cable is currently run into my living room, which is behind 2 solid walls from my bedroom.

So its VDSL or nothing if I go with Ebox.

Thanks, Stefan

Hi there, just an update. I pulled the trigger tonight, and canceled my Tekksavy VDSL service, and ordered my EBox VDSL service. Switch-over install day is Thurs Oct 17th. Crossing my fingers everything goes well!
