whos going to down load BBM for their iphone/android?
who will download it? and if you said yes to the above question, what other im program will you be replacing? Whats App, MSN Messenger, hookt, skipe, ping, yahoo messenge, google talk, sms, etc.. or other -- Happiness is like peeing your pants... Everyone can see it, but only you can feel its Warmth!!
Way to late with BBM. I don't know anyone who still uses BBM. Hangouts has become the preferred app to use. Cross platform, pictures, video calls, videos and read receipts. My whole family uses it, friends, girlfriend a growing number of people use it and have it since it's already installed on every Android phone and can be installed on any iPhone.
I'll dload it this weekend. I use whatsapp usually. I don't see bbm replacing it. But, hey we'll see.
I think its age dependant. Most of my 30+ friends without Blackberries would switch to BBM in a heartbeat while those I know in their 20's will probably stick to whatsapp so they can still continue to send offensive pictures to the group.
There's plenty of other 'killer apps' out there that everyone claims is the current big thing but it's pretty much texting, whatsapp, and BBM for the majority of the population.
I might know a couple people that use Google Talk on their phone and that's about it.
BB is effectively abandoning the consumer hardware market with the failure of the Z10 and the most recent write-downs for unsold smartphones.
It no longer has the cash flow for any new hardware, so BB will join the ranks of niche marketers for very user-specific products like Messenger. -- Logic requires one to deal with decisions that one's ego will not permit. I don't know anyone who uses BBM so I'm not interested.
I wonder why they're doing this. BBM was a product that made the BB unique and set it apart from the competition. Now that is gone. One less reason to buy a BlackBerry.
I've got a dozen or so BB "holdout" friends - some on the new Z/Q 10, some on older Bolds or Torch hardware that I imagine will continue their BB ways and move to BB10 - so I'll definitely be installing it.
For now I've been using FB Messenger app to talk to everyone (as well as SMS for a few) -- but it'll be great to have BBM back. I'm pretty sure most of my other "Androidies" I know will be adding it as well so we'll all have each other back on BBM as well. I don't know any iPhone users so I can't speak to them - the last iPhonie I knew jumped to an S4 in July and I'm sure she'll be adding BBM.
Don't know anyone using whatsapp (don't have it installed either), MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger - all my co-workers use Skype so we all have that on our mobiles as well - but I sign out when I leave the office and sign back in when I get back to work - so it's only a workday app for me.
I'm looking forward to it and will be downloading it. I'm not sure why because very few people I know us it anymore. I've never touched whatsapp. I would like a cross platform messenger that is somewhat more secure than facebook/email/SMS. BBM could fit that bill. Time will tell if it's embraced.

The likely hood is that only the patents will be going to someone but the technology has been deemed worthless as an asset so I highly doubt the product portfolio will remain.
BBM is not on the Play store even though they were tweeting this morning about how awesome it is on Android. And now this....
Another launch fail. Well done Blackberry.
I'm guessing they are having issues with all the "fake" BBM apps in the play store and they are trying to get them removed/cleaned up by Google before they push the real app out, so people aren't confused by which one they should download. I counted no less than 5 or 6 : "BBM for Andoid" "The Real BBM" "BBM Messenger Android" "Blackberry BBM" that say they are from "Blackberry inc." when I just searched the play store. Those need to be gone before a real app can be pushed out otherwise the confusion and damages caused by the fake apps will be immeasurable.
Probably not. Most people I send messages to have unlimited texting. With SMS you know they get the message right away, and you know everyone has it installed.
our fairly new BB device (after hours tech support device) was just replaced with an iPhone...non-stop issues with it the past year...we'll see how the iPhone works out.
They couldn't have done that before launch? This isn't supposed to be some fly by night business.
Let's say Disney wanted to add an app to the Play store. First off, do you think there would be even a hint of "fake" Disney apps to begin with? And even if there were, do you think those apps would still exist on launch day?
No and no.
Blackberry fail. -- I'm a man, but I can change. If I have to. I guess.

but, this is what you can get in an open environment...say what you want about the "walled garden" that is Apple, but it was built that way to minimize/prevent such things. -- People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
No, the way to prevent such things is to be vigilant against such things.
which is exactly why Apple has done things the way they have.
in a completely open environment, there is no way to be completely vigilant...look at pirating for an example...there really is no way to stop it. -- People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
BBM is avail for android, kewl. Still know lots that use it at sporting events for example so that coaches across a course can relay progress of athletes
That may be so, but the real reason for Apple's closed ecosystem is to maintain a monopoly for their products, and the higher prices that go with it.
That works for a time until the monopolized product becomes commoditized, after which sales will crater without continuous revolutionary (not evolutionary) products. Apple management is kidding themselves if they think the name alone will stop that from happening to their products. -- Logic requires one to deal with decisions that one's ego will not permit. partly, yes...but the other part is a controlled customer experience...this control makes it more possible to ensure a consistent level of performance/customer experience/minimal issues...when you design the hardware, software and control the apps, it makes for a more stable environment where providing something that "just works" is easier to achieve. -- People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Google fail - not Blackberry fail - Blackberry doesn't have any control over what goes on the Play store - they can request things that infringe trademark/copyright be taken down (and I'm sure have been consistently), but it's up to Google to do the work and respond in a timely manner. These fake BBM apps have been pushed by the hundred over the last week - as fast as Google takes them down another half dozen show up. Google needs to implement some sort of title filtering that won't allow ANY app that contains "BBM" or "blackberry messenger" in the title other than the very one app that the folks at Blackberry themselves push out - and I'm not sure Google has that in place - or operational.
