Naperville Uverse???

Just got off the phone with ATT and upgraded to Uverse from DSL. I asked how this is going to work being that I have not seen any Fiber being installed to the PEDS.

I asked if she knew if they were going to have to change the NID on my house or if uverse was going to utilize the copper wires. She seemed to think they were going to use the copper wires as do I. But I couldn't get an answer on wether the fiber is even to the PED yet. She just kept saying that my address states that I am able to get Uverse. So I signed up for the 12mb service.

Does anyone know if there is Fiber Yet in the Ashbury Subdivision off 95th Street near Book Rd?

I see a lot of bad reviews for Uverse but thought it has to be faster then the DSL top service I have now? Or did I make a huge Mistake?

I have a Netgear Router/Modem now. I know I am not going to be able to use the netgear as the modem. I have a lot of my house hardwired using the Netgear, is there a good amount of ports on the 2wire for me to hardwire?

Should I just cancel and keep what I have? The only reason I am switching is due to streaming video which seems to be a problem more and more lately with the DSL.

Thanks Guys!!!

What speed tiers and services (TV?) show for nearest neighbors' addresses in uverse online availability check? »AT&T U-Verse FAQ

Most uverse RG's have 4 LAN ports I believe. Likely can reconfigure that Netgear (say it has 4 LAN ports?) as bridge-mode (disabling modem part and DHCP/NAT, connect to RG LAN-LAN), to yield 3+3=6 LAN ports total. (Rumored some routers in bridge-mode can also revert WAN port to yield one more LAN port).

Or if your devices don't mind segregation into two subnets, put Netgear's WAN port in DMZ of RG for 3 ports on RG subnet, 4 on Netgear subnet.

Just because it's Uverse doesn't mean they're installing fiber. In my area Uverse is just glorified DSL with the fiber never leaving the central office.

We can't answer this due to lack of information. What speed is your current DSL? Streaming from where, Youtube, Netflix, somewhere else?

The closest the fibre will get is our local node, or if you're unlucky, your CO. You will not be seeing fibre to your ped any time soon, if ever.

Thanks a lot guys I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.

The current service I have is DSL 6mb. I signed up for the Uverse 12mb, they told me I can go up to 50 or so mb.

I have been having trouble with VUDU and Facebook in the last couple weeks. Before this I really haven't had any problems.

After reading all the problems with Uverse maybe I should just keep what I have?

Anyone out there have Uverse in my area?

When I say Ped I am referring to the unit in the easement where the cables come into and then break off in pairs to the house. The boxes on your house are called NID and NOD.

I did not know that you could have Uverse without having Fiber to the PED. I knew that it would be copper to the house unless you were real lucky to have a new FIBER NID on your house.

I know that they have not installed Fiber to the PEDs

Thanks again guys, really appreciate it!!!

U-verse is most commonly FTTN; less common it is wired back to the CO over copper, with rare FTTP deployment.

U-verse over copper will be either VDSL, or ADSL2+; using PTM and 802.1x authentication. Within 10,000 feet, or so, of a DSLAM, ADSL2+ and VDSL are capable of doubling ADSL speed, or more; closer will be faster.

AT&T has speed profiles based on some percentage of max sync; such that missing the sync for a higher profile limits the user to the next lower profile. On a 9,156 foot loop, my max sync was ~5900 kb, below the level required for 6.0 M service, so only 3.0 M was offered. If you get 6.0 M on ADSL, 12.0 M on ADSL2+, or VDSL, is very possible.

So how's it working out for you now? I'm in an adjacent division, and a rep just came by and signed me up for an 18MB down and 3MB up line with the U300 plan... I have a few days to cancel. I have Comcast now, but the deal will save me quite a bit of money... Just wondering what your experience is now that you've had it for a few days...

Where did I say I had U-verse? I was describing my speed at distance as a past customer. I did have legacy ADSL since the Pacific Bell days, but I a no longer with AT&T.
