 | only get advertised speed after modem reboot So this is really starting to get under my skin! I've been through all the customer support pages and on the phone and live chat & I'm not a dummy lol! Yes I've got the cables plugged in correctly mr. Centurylink yes the green lights are on mr centurylink (that what I mean by them treating you like a dummy) anyhow problem specific is I only qualify for the 7 which is just fine and fast for what I need it for. But I only get my advertised speed when I reboot my modem (actiontec m1000 with wireless module) I know most of the time your only suppose to get like 70% or so but that's just it, when I reboot I get 7.2 to 7.5 consistently! over my rated speed but only for a couple hours or so I haven't figured out exactly when it does it then I'm consistently at 0.8 to 1.2 to 1.5 never higher. I reboot the modem and tadah right back to over 7 every single time! So I don't see this as a congestion issue or time of the day issue or hogged bandwidth as ive tested while streaming on other units in the house and all by itself. Is there something on the modem configuration page I can change or any ideas at all! Getting frustrated! I even have my 192 modem config page saved in my phone so I can just reboot it under the utilities tab quickly anytime I want to get my speed back up! Thanks for any help |

Does ping also become a problem when your speeds go junk? |
|
 | Ping is unaffected. Is this what your asking for? |

Re: only get advertised speed after modem reboot By chance are you running everything thru wireless? Does the speed drop for any computers that are connected thru Ethernet to the modem?
I have seen it where if I have something plugged in thru Ethernet, I will get the advertised speed 99% of the time, but if I use a laptop thru wireless or my cell phone thru wireless, the speed will be a lot slower (even if I'm 5 feet from the router)
I believe what pmike means by ping, is if you ping a site right after you reboot the modem & it tells you how many hops/ms it took to reach the site, does the ping #'s get worst, if you were to ping the same site (lets say) 5 hrs later.
One set of #'s that I might be concerned about (and others and confirm if I'm right or wrong) is the "Far End RS Fec (I/f) 1853/0". I can't tell if this particular item is the number of errors it has corrected since you last rebooted the modem or something else. |
|
 | Everything is through wireless no wired connections at all. As far as the ping goes I can't be 100% sure I'll have to do more logging and see if there is a difference when I'm getting the different speeds. Its just very strange to me that I can guarantee full speed with a reboot but then it drops off. Its been at full speed the past few hours ive checked it every 20 minutes or so through speedtest. Its almost like when you get throttled by your cell provider you get fast speed till you cap then your dialed back only thing different is a reboot and I'm good to go again! |
|
 | Do you have anything that you can try using a Ethernet connection on? That way you can see if it's in fact the internet speed or the wireless speed to the modem |
|
|
|
 | I can try and find an ethernet cable and plug my laptop into the modem and check the speeds now and when it drops off. Good idea! |

Your downstream attenuation could be better but it is not something to worry about
This is the stats when your speeds are junk correct? |
|
 | Actually this is when my speeds are good! 7.54 to be exact on a 7Mbps plan |

Ok
when your speed decides to jump into a dumpster post the stats then |

 | Modem is showing it being connected at the rated speed. Also noticed errors are a lot higher since the first picture.
By chance, have you found an Ethernet cable yet?
I should also ask, what are all of the devices you are trying to use? If your cell phone is one, I can say that I have the same problem that you have (Speed test on hard wired computer shows 24.5 Mbps, but on my cell, I'm only getting around 7 Mbps, which I just a speed test a few minutes ago).
One thing you could try is another channel for the wireless |

I can tell by the signal bars, you're using a Samsung device, they will always be slower on WiFi for some reason (i think Samsung cuts the power down to save battery)
on my WiFi, my HTC Evo LTE (work phone) will test ~35Mbps on my 40Mbps connection, whereas my Galaxy Note II (personal phone) will test ~5-10 on the same one. If i'm on a Wireless G router, the Note II is usually more like 2Mbps.
My Galaxy S2 and S3 did this as well, so i'm assuming it's a "tuning" issue with Samsung hardware. |
|
 | That's another funny thing it is my cell and it is a note 2 but its actually listing the fastest speeds at 7.5 the wife's htc one will usually list the same speeds as well! Look at me here complaining about my measly 7Mbps when you guys are rocking 25-40 down the pipe! Oh well 10 is the fastest my provider has where I live and its not worth the cost to change from the 7 to the 10! Still looking for a cable, gonna borrow one from my brother in law. Even if it ends up being the wireless and not my modem speed it only confuses me more that just by rebooting it gives me full speeds for a while? Thanks for all this info guys! |
|
 | Are you sure the max speed you can get is 10? Looking at the pics you provided, you are in a former Qwest territory, where the next speed up after 7 Mbps was 12 Mpbs, not 10 |
|
 | Maybe it's 12 I can't remember! But like I said the 7 is pleanty fast for what I need just wish I can finally figure out how to keep it there without it tanking and needing reset! |

If possible, try connecting the modem at the NID. Check the line stats and see how they compare. If you can. leave it connected there for a while and see how it behaves.
You may have an inside wiring issue. Check for things that can cause interference, like halogen or fluorescent lights, near any of the phone wiring. How old is your inside phone wiring? You may benefit from a new cable run from the NID to the modem. |

 | The main housing with the built in filter that snaps over the main Jack on the wall straight to the modem, no phones or anything attached to this Junction |

 | This doesn't look like a DSL problem to me. The only thing I see is about 200 CRC errors. Assuming the two samples are 10 hrs apart, that's not a huge number. The FEC errors are really nothing to worry about since they were corrected on the fly. CRC errors require retransmission.
IMO there's nothing of value anybody can add until you can connect an Ethernet cable. I suspect wireless issues. But that's hard to prove. Take a peek at inSSIDer to tune up your wireless connection. |
