Upgrade from 15mb to 50mb...good for torrents?

Hi guys,...

Right now I have the basic 15Mb package but I'm thinking about upgrading to their Ultimate 50Mb down/5Mb up package.

My current modem is *really* outdated. It's a Scientific Atlanta DPC2100. I've had it for at least 6 years and it seems to be getting a bit long in the tooth(frequent disconnects when d/ling two more torrents, or when using skype, etc).

I'll be upgrading to a new modem....probably this model:

»www1.arrisi.com/Video-Solutions/···/SBG6580

How much better performance and speed can I expect torrents to d/l upon making this speed and modem upgrade? Will there be a significant speed difference going from 10mb to 50mb? Will the modem perform better than the Scientific Atlanta DPC2100?

dont buy a modem with built in wireless. just get a D3 modem and a seperate router. TWC will not sell you D3 with a D2 modem so you have to swap it no matter what whether u supply a new one or they rent u one.

any upgrade will improve your situation. my advice is to have a TWC tech come out and install a new modem along with your HSD upgrade. before any of this, though, call and ask Tier 3 to do a packet loss test just to make sure that isn't your main issue, and if it is, a service call can be scheduled to allow the tech time to correct any issues that may lie outside your home. if you decide to purchase your own modem, that's fine but at least have your current (TWC-provided?) modem and coax checked out before you lose the hardware support.

Thanks for the replies. I doubt it's packet loss, as I didn't have this issue for the first 5 or so years. Only until maybe a year or so ago, has it started doing that kind of thing.

Hmmm...so, dont buy a modem with built in wireless? OK I'll take that advice. So would you go with this modem instead then?

I'm currently on the 30/5 plan and it works fine for me. I don't see the benefit in upgrading to anything faster if the upload speed is the same. Maybe if 50/5 were instead 50/25...then I'd upgrade.

i'll leave the debate over the type of router to others, as good points can be made for both sides. as for the PL issue, the source can be anything from a loose coax or bad splitter inside your home, to a cut or something wrong with the line outside. it could even be something not even on your property. until a test is done, you don't know the PL exists or not and it's TWC's issue to fix if it does so why not call?

kba4 is right, just because you didn't have packet loss issues for the first 5 years or so has no bearing on whether you have the problem now.

Instead of going through the pain to call T3 to have them do a packet loss test just do it yourself at www.pingtest.net.

Great site to use for testing the quality of your internet connection.

I must agree with k1mmel never buy into the modem/router wi-fi combo's. WiFi standards are ever evolving most combo's are currently [N] standard a few are dual band. The newest standard is however [AC]. The best [N Dual Band] wireless routers deliver 900Mbps [450x450] while the AC standard is 1750 Mbps [450x1300]. And should you desire to upgrade in a couple of years to the upcoming triple band [AD] standard.

I stream HD video between rooms via wireless 5ghz and while Dual band N worked for HD 1080i, 1080p even 3DHD i suspect with ever increasing usage of dual band and upcoming 4KTV Dual band N may prove to be be inadequate.

Docsis 3 is very likely here to stay for some time to come, wireless N is soon to become obsolete with gigabit wi-fi [AC] gaining in popularity and 60 gigabit wi-fi [AD] is right around the corner.

Thanks for that link nephipower. I just went there and tested my connection. Got a grade A. Packet loss 0%. Jitter 7ms. Ping 20ms.

I will still insist on the tech coming out to my home and running a test on my line anyway, just to make sure. Then I will get the new Motorola modem from him and we'll see what happens.

Motorola SURFboard SB6141
ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless
qBittorrent 32bit or 64bit

That combo works great for me on a TWC 30/5 connection.

On a related topic... how can one just get a PRICE LIST from TWC to evaluate the options?? I have the basic 15/1 package, and cannot find out what upgrades are available and for what cost? "Why not just call them?" you ask? It's because TWC reps are mandated to walk you through a sales process to "determine your needs" and present you with the "best options."

The online sales process won't be any more tolerable or transparent.

Just log into MyServices, click on the Upgrade/Add Services link and it will show you what the upgrades will cost.

In most areas, each tier above standard costs $10 more, while ultimate costs $30 more than extreme.

A well seeded torrent will make great use of the increased speed. You should see your speeds triple. If you are seeing speeds around 1.8Mbps right now then you should see over 6Mbps.

The Motorola SURFboard SB6141 is a great modem and I highly recommend it. If you want to save some money try and get a Cisco Model DPC3010 which you can find used/ refurbished for around $30. It's not on Time Warner's approved modem list so you might have troubles getting them to activate it. I didn't have any and there are others on Amazon that got it activated as well. I have experience with both modems on Time Warner and couldn't be happier.

So please don't advise that people buy it.

Money is better spent on a seedbox. Though if you are active you might want more bandwidth to and from the box
