[Chat] 2013 fall yard maintenance

Given it's unofficially the start of fall this weekend (I consider Labor Day the "official" start to fall ), I'm looking ahead to fall lawn care.

My plan in order:

-cut grass a bit on the short side
-core aerate
-lime
-winterizing fertilizer
-cut grass a bit short until dormant

I like Agway's 4 stage program, so I'll be using stage 4. Anything else I should do before packing up for the winter? Should I dethatch or wait 'til spring?

[Chat] Re: 2013 fall yard maintenance

I dethatched last weekend and aerated this morning. I'll apply stage 4 next weekend. I don't know about height. I might go a tiny bit lower than normal but that will depend on the forecast.

I think you got it nailed. Or we'll both look like fools come spring.

I don't do the lawn winterizing. I leave the fertilizing, weeds, and bug maintenance to a professional. All I do is cut the grass and leave it at that.
They generally do the last lawn car/winterization in early November.

I just finished a major re-hab on portions of my lawn that did poorly this year. Now I can sit back and wait for it to grow.

This is the best season for upgrading a lawn. Hope it comes in OK.

We have about an acre of lawn, the rest of the property is wooded.

All I do is mow it when it gets tall.

Fertilizer just makes grass grow faster. See no reason why I should spend money to have to mow more frequently.

Is Agway Greenlawn Fall fertilizer (what is in the pics I attached) the same as Agway stage 4 fertilizer? I bought 2 bags after the guy at Agway told me they were the same, but I'm suspicious. Local Agway has stage 1, stage 2, then Greenlawn summer fertilizer and then Greenlawn fall fertilizer. They do not carry any bags labeled stages 3 or 4.

I don't think it's the same. Stage 4 is 22-0-10. »www.agway.com/catalog/home_and_g···15m.html

I'll post a pic of a stage 4 bag tomorrow. Just waiting for some rain to be in the forecast before I apply it.

So your local Agway carries the actual stage 4?!?! My local doesn't stock it and won't order it for me.

This be the stuff. Got one batch from Bethel Agway and then the other bags from Southington Agway. The had a deal last year in the spring where you buy all four stages and got something like a $40 rebate. I didn't really need stage 4 because I had some left over but it was basically like getting it for free.

I'll start bitching about leaves pretty soon.
And my desire for a flame thrower.

That's exactly what I want... but my local Agway won't stock it. I'll use the Greenlawn fall fertilizer and see how that does... it looks pretty close to stage 4 in all reality.

I was wondering about your leaves, actually. You were oddly absent from this conversation.

A couple reasons. I'm still hanging on to summer (pool is still open!) and only a few leaves have dropped here.
I'll wait for a full-tilt rant later on.

FYI - I was at the Southington, CT Agway today and they still stock it if you need it.

Re: [Chat] 2013 fall yard maintenance

I mowed the yard yesterday.
Try as I might, I couldn't come up with one valid reason or plausible excuse not to.

I can see 1 tree starting to change color.
