I still think that you will need a relatively beefy system to run many of the games. Could you imagine trying to run Skyrim on a steambox with a substandard graphics card? I know I couldn't.

One of the features of SteamOS is streaming a game from the main PC to the living room through SteamOS. It means you only need to spend money on one good CPU/GPU that will go on your main PC and have a small, cheap, quiet box in the living room just stream it to the TV.

I don't know how well it will work, but considering Valve's history and place in the market, they are not in the habit of doing a half-assed job.

Agreed...there is no way they'd taut this as being a key piece of the platform, and find it only runs at 480 and 5 seconds of lag.

Anointing this to be top notch before its released is shortsighted. I agree that Steam seems to be on the money with its solutions, but lets keep in mind that Steam has stumbled in the past. Lets wait and evaluate the solution before we start praising it.

I don't think anyone in here is praising it or anointing anything to be top notch. We're merely pointing out the positive aspects of what they announced.

What do you guys think will more dramatically shape the way we game in the future, Oculus Rift or this Steam hardware?

There are only 2 ways it can really fail.

1. They price it too high.
2. Console gamers don't pick up on it.

I am under no doubt at all that Steam will run smoothly on the Box, and will do everything they promise it will do. it's too big a risk for them to release a shoddy product.

Price wise it needs to come in under the PS4 and the Xbox One. The games also need to be reasonabley priced and/or regularly discounted like the PC store to give them the edge.

Sony and Microsoft fanboys will be avoiding it and slagging it off, so Steam needs to appeal to the casual gamers and the techies initially and hope word of mouth prompts the fanboys to change views.

The SteamBox is not a console or anything special. It's pretty much a PC running a specialized version of Linux. The game store will be the exact same Steam store that we have now, with all the games working on every system you have it on just like now.

+1, this isn't a console, it's more of a PC gaming terminal, so the games should be priced exactly as Steam games.

It isn't a console as we've previously known them, and yes it is essentially a PC, however Steam are marketing it to console owners, to be used in the environment where consoles are predominant and to try to gain a market share of the console market.

So for all intents and purposes it is a console (even though it's more like a PC)

it is not about how it is marketed. It's about your comment on how Steam needs to do similar sales on the box as on the PC to succeed... which is moot because SteamBox IS a PC and it will give access to the exact same store that everyone has access to.

And I said earlier, I do not see it marketed to console owners more than PC gamers... it's marketed to all gamers and it's not about winning or competing the console market. It's about being the first ones to enter a new market (PC in a living room) as the Box is meant for a lot more than just games.

I agree. It lowers the barriers for console owners who might want to get into PC gaming but it's not catering exclusively to them at the expense of PC gamers. I probably won't need the box because I have my PC in my man cave hooked up to a 46" tv via HDMI already, but you can bet I'm picking up that controller.

Exactly....I think Steam can fill a niche that XBOX/PS4 can't with bringing PC games to the living room. I don't think its ALL about catering to consoles and trying to draw them over. PC gamers who do want to sit on the couch and be able to play titles that they have on the PC without having to either drag their pc into the living room, or buy the same title on a console.

Just off the top of my head, I have several Lego games, Skyrim, Batman: Arkham X, Dark Souls and many more console ports that I bought for PC....I'd love to play em on the big screen downstairs (when the wife isn't watching Survivor or some other mind numbing crap )

Then, you have console gamers who have had a similar effect in games that were never made for the console but they had heard about and wanted to play...they now have a window to do so.

I think it's brilliant, honestly...almost a best of both worlds scenario where both camps have something to gain from it.

And yes bRod...the controller is awesome, too...jeeesh shuddup already. I'll be getting one for sure...I'll be keeping an eye on steam OS and the boxes as well.

I don't know the current state of the open source drivers for Nvidia and ATI have never used them.

The binary blob for Nvidia works damn well and have had no more issues than any Windows blob. The only time I have had issues is when getting way ahead in kernel versions. However, in those instances by the time I encountered the problem a quick fix of some sort was always available.

As for the ATI blobs, no clue. I stopped using ATI products years ago when a bought a brand new T60 Thinkpad and one year later they (ATI) discontinued support. From that time on I vowed never to use or recommend their cards. The times I did use their cards their blobs were always problematic to install. Only on rare times would the Nvidia blob give me troubles.

As for supported hardware particularly new stuff again I've no clue about ATI but Nvidia (in my experience) has almost always had Linux drivers for their new stuff. At times they may lag Windows but not by a whole lot of time. In fact if you take a gander at the driver support page for Linux they even have drivers for their Titan line.

In the end I do not see an issue with at least Nvidia stuff. That of course will depend on which Linux distro they choose.

Yeah. Those games make a huge difference on the big screen TV.

I already have the Lego games on my HTPC, along with some racing games, some fighting games, a bunch of indie platformers and a couple of FPS games. What a difference it makes.

Playing the Mass Effect series was pretty much epic on the big screen with some nice speakers. Serious Sam is way more fun when it comes to mindless killing. Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter on the couch speaks for itself. And Lego games and platformers are a blast on the couch with co-op.

Replaying the Arkham games and trying out Darksouls on the couch would be awesome and on my to-do list. I've just been avoiding it for now because my HTPC starts slowing down if I try to put the settings above medium. It's a nice little machine, but I went for a silent, small, good looking machine instead, so I really can't wait to try out SteamOS with streaming. I'll definintely be jumping on it as soon as it's out.
