[Verizon] Tethering?

I have a Motorola Droid Razr M and i the settings I see a setting called 'tethering & mobile hotspot'. If I click on it it has an option for USB tethering.
Please forgive my ignorance because I'm sure this is probably common knowledge amongst veteran smart phone users, but this sounds like I can plug the USB cable into my PC and go online from anywhere using my cell phone as a modem. Am I right?

Because I tried and it ain't workin'.

If you pay for it. Verizon disables hotspot and tethering without paying for the option.

At least that's how it used to be. I've had rooted & ROMed phones for years, so I always have this option working.

So even though I already have a data plan I can't tether? So the data plan is for the data that I use on the phone only then? Oh well. I figured it must have been something like that.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

So if I root the phone then I could possibly get a third party app that will allow me to do this? But of course I'm guessing that this will violate my terms of service though. I'm sure somewhere buried in the TOS I agreed that I would not do that so they may hit me with a fee or something if I get caught right?

Do you have an unlimited plan or capped data usage? When carriers did away with unlimited, as far as i know, you can tether as you see fit since it will just come out of your bucket of bytes. Those still on unlimited can not do it with the native tethering apps on the phone. To do it with USB you would need to have the USB drivers for your device installed so it is probably quite a bit easier to just use the Wifi hotspot instead.

swintec may be right on the drivers on the PC. You have a Moto and I seem to remember that I had drivers on the PC. I don't remember if I had to download them or it was Win7 PnP magic (hard to remember 4 years ago). I didn't download anything manually for my Samsung tho.

I'm still betting that Verizon doesn't want you to tether. They want that extra $10-15 a month for another device using the bits in the bucket.

Did a search and found this:

Nope, no unlimited plan. Just regular data plan. Doesn't work. It did install drivers and I see a new NIC on my PC installed so it connects to the phone fine. But when I try to use it it pops up a windows saying I don't have a "subscription".

Update:
Called Verizon and they confirmed what you say beck. In order to use it I have to pay additional $20 a month. I would get more bandwidth, but there is an additional fee. I asked if I could just use the bandwidth I am already paying for but they said no. The data I am already paying for is for my phone only. If I want to use additional devices through my phone that is extra $$.

Of course because the data is ... different on the phone than the data is when its on the computer, it's phone 1's and 0's... computer 1's and 0's are special and require more money. It makes perfect sense (not).

Hopefully one day we will get some carriers that just want to provide us services, instead of nickel-and-diming us.

That's stupid. I know US Cellular allows tethering with their capped data plans and I think AT&T does as well from the one phone that i saw do it.

Root your phone and download PDANet. You have an LTE phone which operates in the C Block of the 700 Mhz spectrum which has certain restrictions pertaining to open access rules. Can't stop someone from using a third-party app.

You cannot be charged extra for tethering if you use a 3rd party app because you are on a tiered data plan. The FCC made its ruling on this last July. When you called Verizon they told you it was $20 for their tethering solution. Yes, Mobile Broadband Connect does cost $20 per month. But you don't want that. Use PDANet.

And in case you think I'm blowing smoke out my rear:
quote:
Does this mean that Verizon will no longer charge for tethering?
On June 28, Verizon introduced new wireless service plans that include tethering in the base price of the plan. So for new customers, they will not be charged extra to use their phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
But Verizon still offers its older plans to existing customers. This means customers who want to subscribe to Verizon's Mobile Broadband Connect service for an additional $20 a month can still do so if they want. But if they'd like to download a third party app from the Google Play or some other application store that offers such an app, they can do that and avoid the $20.

You mean free FoxFi (WiFi Tether w/o Root) does not still work?

Interesting. How "new" is a new customer? I got this phone only a few months ago. Should I have just asked to speak to a supervisor or escalated this? Does this mean new plans can tether with no extra fees?

I mean honestly I don't want to do this often. Rarely if ever would be more like it. I was just out the other day and I had my laptop and my newfangled smart phone that I thought could tether so I thought I would try it to alleviate the boredom and surf while wasting time stuck in a remote location. I am sometimes caught in these locations and the ability to tether would be a welcome distraction.

I honestly don't know. It may work great. I had read some new iteration of Jelly Bean broke it. I haven't used FoxFi in quite awhile but when I did it required Root access ....... unless I'm thinking of some other app that did require root.

And looking at PDANet just now it says Root is not required. Again, I haven't done this for quite awhile.

It doesn't matter how "new" the plan is. The only thing that matters is if you are on a "tiered" data plan. If you are, Verizon cannot charge you IF you use a 3rd party tethering app.
Why would you call Verizon again? There is nothing to escalate. Just download PDANet from Google Play and tether away. And you don't have to Root for this. I was wrong about that. YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED ANYTHING EXTRA BY VERIZON FOR TETHERING.

I could probably dredge up a link to the actual FCC decree from July 2012 that covers this issue. But I gave you a link the CNET analysis of the FCC decision. All the info is in that article.

It has probably been 6 months since I have tried it but it required no rooting and worked fine for me and no messing with cords.

Very good article. Thanks for that. If I don't have to root the phone then I may try that app. The reason I wold call VZ is because I already have an app on the phone that can do this. If they have to allow me to do it by law then I don't need a third party app. They should just let me do it. Unless it requires a different plan. That's why I was thinking of doing it.

After looking at the VZ website it looks like I am on an older plan and I added data to it when I got a smart phone. The new plans are share everything and cost more. I'm guessing from the article that that is what was meant.

Thanks all.

I use Foxfi on my Verizon phones and they both work with no problems.

I did not sign up with a tethering plan. In fact, once I called Verizon and I told the agent that I needed tethering service on an "occastional basis". He recommended I just download Foxfi from the market and not pay for Verizon's tethering service.

Somehow, I just don't believe that...not one bit.
