Server Hosting / Port Forwarding / Proxy (HT1100)

Hey all, i'v been reading many threads here. (BTW - Hughes net HT1100) But my questions almost fall into some of the same categories but not positive. Anyway I'm trying to host a game server for trackmania nations forever from my pc. The problem is i can join the server via LAN, but when i view my server in the list of all servers, I can not join, and neither can anyone else. It tells me I get a connection failed, and proceeds to give me the ip address of the proxy server, followed by the port number I forwarded in my router settings (I found this was the proxy server ip by going to "whatsmyip" ). My question is even if I turned off web acceleration...which I'm assuming is "the proxy server", would it even help my efforts in port forwarding.

Other things I did to try to get my server to work:

- set up static ip on my pc
- set ports on router to the correct numbered port and also the correct type (udp&tcp)
- my firewall on router is off, and the one on my pc is set to allow the programs
- under my router settings, in virtual DMZ host it tells me that the static ip there is different from the static ip on my pc. The one that the router considers to be "the private ip" is the static ip I set for my pc.

I hate to write a story book here but I'm trying to figure all of this out, if someone could maybe try and explain how I can set things up so I can host my server, I would be very grateful. Thanks for your time.

If you've done reading here about "static IPs" you will have found that "you can't get there from here."

Hughes has never allowed any ports to be forwarded through the modem unless the customer paid an additional monthly charge for a "static IP." They really should have always called it "Public IP" because the static part isn't the really important thing, but they never offered a Public IP unless it was also Static.

Word here has always been that Gen4 accounts do not have the ability to add the extra charge IP with port forwarding. Unless/until they do you are completely out of luck. If it is something you are willing to pay for (charge for a single IP was typically $10 per month) then it is worth contacting Hughes to see if they will sell you one, or when they plan to offer such a service.

thanks dbirdman, i called hughes net and talked to them about port forwarding, and they transferred me to home tech support, which told me they only offer help with everything Except...(modem and satellite). So then I called hughes net back, and spoke to tech support in which i had to be transferred to a manager, because the regular tech support knew nothing about port forwarding. Then when I spoke to the manager, he told me that all inbound and outbound port are open on my hughes net modem.

Home Tech Support is the "Partner" that Hughes has chosen to , well, "Partner" with. This is a Paid 3rd party "Friend" that Hughes has chosen to sleep with as it provides Cash Flow to both companies.

It is a rather sad way of doing business, particularly in light of the fact that this is done be Hughes 1st tier "support" staff.
Said support is located usually in India.

The nature of many of these "Support Transfers" is offensive in that many Hughes customers are not aware that they are no longer working with their ISP which they mistakenly trust.

In my personal opinion the "Partner" that Hughes selected ranks right up there with scams such as late night TVs "My Clean PC" and others of its ilk.

I am not sure its even within the Hughes TOS to try and run a server.

Yeah it is really bad, because i talked with home tech support and i was told they aren't related to hughes net, and only provide router service help among a few other things. Also it costs 9.99 per month for their help, or 99.99 one time fee for "lifetime" support. It was pretty frustrating dealing with getting transferred to that telemarket scheme. Anyway I spoke wit hughes net again, and I was told that obtaining a static ip is not available at this time with gen 4. But they are working on it.

My last question to you guys s their any way to host a server with out a static ip?

To my knowledge No.
As I alluded to in my reply, I "think" you are not even allowed, under the Hughes Terms Of Service (TOS) to host a server.

You indicate that you have Gen$4 service.
All, again to the best of my knowledge, info regarding Gen4 TOS, FAP and all the rest can be found in the link that follows.
You may select from the list on the left, various topics, terms and conditions.

Be advised that you have a non-standard, third rate, last resort type of connection.

Gen4 info:

»legal.hughesnet.com/FairAccessPolicyGen4.cfm

Networking info from an informed user:

»jacksontech.net/index.php/articl···ing-faq/

And in the end if you have the ....the...need: the official Hughes support forum:

»community.myhughesnet.com/hughesnet/topics

Please post back in the end, the outcome of your journey.

Support only the gaming company's that matter the most, pay for something that actually is worth buying or has a good reason for how much it's worth.

@ diablo, I used to run tmn and tmnf on dial-up, my latency was around 500-1000ms, while not good, was still somewhat drive-able. I'v had about 7 years of experience with this game, and as far as playable latency goes up to 300ms before you experience any lag type symptoms while playing. With gen4, my d/l and uploads are pretty solid most of the time 10mb down / 1mb up. With those up and down speeds, it should be able to host around 10-15 ppl before lag becomes an issue on the server.

@gwalk, thank you for those links man, the jackson tech one is seeming to be helpful, i will let you know how this turns out.

His answer was correct, but did not answer anything about port forwarding. "Open" means "Not blocked." It does not mean "can be forwarded."

The Hughes modem accepts inbound connections only when they are "established," a networking term meaning that an outbound connection was made first.

@birdman, thx for responses ^^ yeah I fought with hughes net on the phone, for hours, and they told me that they dont provide "public ip's" for gen4. They finally told me that if I wanted a public ip, I could down-grade to gen3 hughes net, and they would provide me with a public ip.

@gwalk - well my journey felt long for the 5 days of trying to get this to work. But it turns out its a no go. But I did find out that maybe if I was smart enough, I could set up a server with an ipv6 address, because their are so many, those address' are public. But I did set-up an ipv6 addy for my server code, but I think "trackmania nations forever" is set up for reading only ipv4. Anyway I'm not knowledgeable enough to make it work if it could.

Thanks for all the help guys^
