| Oil separators? Are they of any real use? I have a fairly mild street Mustang GT with the 3V 4.6L V8. One of the mods I keep seeing on cars of this type is the oil separator.
Anyone used one before? Good results? Bad results? No results? I'd like to know before I start spending bucks and working on the car. |

A waste of money for a street car, IMHO. |

 | Oh! Are we talking about a windage tray? I wasn't quite sure what he meant with the term "oil separator". I was thinking it was something like a fuel/water separator. |

If we're talking about windage trays, save the windage trays for folks that race for money. When that last hundredth of a second can mean the difference between taking home some cash or going on the trailer, then that type of thing becomes useful. |

Aha! I didn't even know those existed, but Ford chose to never have me as a future customer way back in 1980, so I don't pay attention to their stuff.
So do those engines suffer from factory-installed blowby problems, or does it only show up when forced induction is added to the mix? |

There also called "catch cans". They keep the oil sucked up by the PCV system from entering the intake. The attached photos show the one I have on my Challenger. That is about 1,000 miles worth in the one photo. Some people say they don't do anything and that little bit of oil won't hurt anything but I have been using them for years and I never have had to have my injectors cleaned. If you do a lot of spirited driving or go WOT a lot then I would recommend one. -- Statements made by me are not the views or practices of my employer and they cannot be held responsible for any statements I may make. |

Some have reported that in certain climates the oil tends to accumulate as sludge in the pipes leading to the catch can. The vapors simply condense and then never get hot enough to finish traveling to the can, eventually clogging the line.
I guess it depends on where you live as to whether that could be an issue for you. I always liked the idea of keeping the oil out of my intake. -- John M - Cranky network guy |

Based on those pics, yeah, I think I'm going to get one for my vehicle. Maybe it will help clear up the exhaust. Even with cats I end up having to use bronze wool and Borla cleaner/polish on the tips to keep them looking factory new.. |

I have one on my 2012 GT and I have to empty it about every 5k miles. It helps keep your intake clean. If it's a quality piece with OEM hoses, you won't have any issues. I've seen some rubber hoses close shut due to vacuum.
I have one from JLT Performance. |
