CL C1000a keeps locking up

Was iptables DROP - turns out it wasn't. CL supplied C1000a at random locks up, power, dsl, internet light on, solid. Can't web, can't telnet, can't ping - I can pull the power plug and restart and it's good again - for a few hours? a day? then locked up again.

CL (non)support "You need to reboot your computer." "Your modem is bad and we can sell you a new one." Any thoughts on the problem and how to fix? Also, is there a better modem than a C1000?

Thanks
Chuck

You either have a bad modem or power supply, or you are taxing it beyond its capabilities. There are posters that will tell you to use anything but a C1000A. I have a C1000A that has been running for almost a year with no issues. I do have it in bridge mode feeding a separate router, which possibly makes a big difference.

You can use almost any modem that is compatible with your DSL service (ADSL or VDSL). You just need to adjust the settings (VPI/VCI, etc.) to match what is used in your area. However, if you need support from CL, they won't be very helpful unless the attached modem is on their compatibility list.

The C1000A has tons of issues, as you can find on several other topics on here. I'd find anything else and promptly burn that thing if i were you.

Actiontec did an awful job on that with the single core 400MHz processor, expecting it to manage DSL, WiFi, and Linux at the same time reliably.

No, it's probably just overheating. My friend was having problems like that and just sitting it up on a stand for better air flow fixed it.

Yes, as others have said don't use CL's absolutely worthless equipment for anything more than a bridge to a DSL interface.

Modems:
- ZyXEL Q100 (officially VDSL2 only, but it does support fallback to ADSL2+) has been solid for the past few days. I am running this in bridge mode of course.
- If you're willing to spend "a bit" (:P) more, Cisco 887VA (~$300) or Juniper SRX110 (~$500) are routers with integrated VDSL2 (+ ADSL2+ fallback) interfaces.

If you want the modem and routing in one device, the Cisco and Juniper options are the only ones I would suggest. Besides that, if you choose the "cheap modem + good router" option (the combination I chose myself), I can recommend the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite for $100. It's a nice and powerful little router for the price, runs a forked version of Vyatta (which is Debian-based), and won't have any problems doing NAT+firewall at any of CL's service speeds.

I can honestly say this Technicolor C2000A has been great, this is the only CL modem i've been able to use in AZ that does not overheat, go unresponsive, and has a great WiFi radio.

I actually pull the same speed and ping via WiFi that i do over ethernet with this one, my Actiontec modems never accomplished that, and my XyXEL would be marginally slower over WiFi (but it would at least not lock up)

Re: CL C1000a keeps locking up

I had a fan (12"x12") that I laid under it - about 10 days ago -
