 | [Wireless] wifi trouble I just picked up the Hitron cgn3 and the wifi is terrible. I'm done with the rentals. Is there a router out there which works well with enough power for the entire house? |

| best to go tpia and get a wireless router tpia is cheaper and they have unlimited, 300 gb, and 75 gb plans.... keep money off of bell/rogers/cogeco/shaw/telus/videotron.... money goes back with cbb but it is a start to warn big telecom... they lose profit they will do shit to tpia and we will report it... just got to lower their profit... a lot of customers i bet are afraid to quit big telecom.... it's their drug |

Two things it seems, first) on the Rogers site there no mention of them selling a "modem" they call them modems but in reality they are all routers. The op is asking for better wireless. To get better wireless you need a separate router which would mean that you would have to beg rogers to put the Rogers Modem which is really a router in bridge mode since you don't have control on that which is an unethical business practice.
Second) So if you want a better external wireless, then TPIA is a better solution since they sell real modems and attaching an external router/wireless is much simpler. |

Understood... however, unless there is something special about that router:
- you do not have to ask Rogers to do it (I did it myself when I was with Rogers) - If you are going to get a router either way, the same router will not provide 'better wireless' depending on the provider you are using. - from point 1: I (personally) found it no simpler either way, but someone who does not wish to tinker with their 'Rogers Router' would find it simpler...true. - The OP does state he wishes to get away from Rentals, so buying a modem and router from a TPIA will be cheaper than buying the *cough* same *cough* setup from Rogers (but again, this will not get you 'better wireless')
MJB's advice, albeit helpful and accurate, is more of a 'get away from the big boys' answer rather than answering the OPs question: a better router to cover the whole house (as this can be done while being a Rogers customer)
Not advocating staying with Rogers... just saying.
To the OP: I managed to get better coverage with either a cheap DLINK 615, and a (almost) idiot proof Apple Airport Extreme. There are much better routers on the market that many others have recommended here, as well as other threads on the topic. |

You don't buy a router from a TPIA you just buy a modem. It doesn't matter if you go TPIA or Rogers as long as it's in bridge mode and into your own wireless router of choice.
I will always say this, anyone who have an incumbent router as their main gateway are very unsecured. |

Thx for that though...
But this is, of course, besides the point I was making, and what the OP is asking. |

PaulMing,
I have totally opposite experience than yours and the Hitron CGN3 has been a satisfied product from Rogers... which is not a common scene these days. However, I do not live in a big house and therefore your situation should be quite different than mine. All I am saying, this one is way better than Cisco (Scientific Atlanta) DPC-3825 in terms of WiFi performance.
Would bridge mode with a separate WiFi access points / repeaters help in your situation? |
