Whistler Outage SEPT 26 12AM

my internet went out about an hour and a half ago (12:30 AM) so i called in and they said there was an outage and that it should be fixed by 6am, i asked if he knew what was causing the problem and he said he couldnt tell me, curious what could be so confidential they cant talk about it....

Midnight to 6am is the generally accepted outage window for routine work.
If it was a planned outage, the call centre person would have little to no details as to what is going on other than "yes it's off, it will be back on soon"

Likewise, if it actually was an unplanned failure, they wouldn't have a lot of info either. All they'd get back from the field would be an eta for when it's up, cuz really that's all they need.

It's 10L06PM PDT right now. Not sure where you got the 12 AM time from unless you somehow mean yesterday or another timezone.

Not usually - unless you have a SLA with Shaw, it's generally accepted that it'll go down periodically. Shaw tries to do it during off-peak periods (12am-6am) to inconvenience as few people as possible.

It's why you're paying under $100 a month and getting 50+Mbps, while I've seen companies pay $1000/month for 10Mbps (symmetric, though, so you do get 10 up). Heck, upgrading to 30Mbps (symmetric) costs $5k/month.

Shaw stopped notifying users of planned outages years ago.

It used to be business customers who got email notifications of upcoming planned work, but then they just stopped

Re: Whistler Outage SEPT 26 12AM

sorry that i didnt realize shaw was really this bad of a company lol, its not hard to send an email or make a single post giving people the ability to plan for these things, lucky i wasnt doing the one and done tournament on gamebattles that night or i would have been flipping on shaw, and on top of that , not warning us is one thing, but then being secretive about what they were fixing/doing is even more annoying. the fact shaw business customers to my understanding are promised very good uptime (though there is no SLA)its sad they cant even notify them about these things ,letalone making a post on there site or an email that everyone has a chance to read, does anybody have any idea what they could have been doing for 3-5 hours

Like I said, if you're willing to pay for it, you can get notified when it goes down and get better upload speeds.

It was something like $1000/month for 10Mbps symmetric. Upgrade to 30Mbps symmetric for $5000/month.

And you get the SLA and notification when changes happen, and quick response when things go sideways.

But then again, you're also paying 10 times as much money per month, getting 1/10th the download speed and twice the upload speed.
