Wifi coming to cars

And guess has their foot on the gas pedal (or is that hand in your wallet?) Robbers.

Seems Rogers has made a deal to get the Sprint Velocity system , allowing you to have wifi in your car.

Rogers Communications Inc. is partnering with Sprint Corp. to introduce a “connected car” wireless service next year that will provide Canadians with high-speed Internet access while they are on the road.
The agreement between the two carriers, which will be announced Thursday, enables auto makers that deploy the Sprint Velocity system – as Chrysler Group does on some of its U.S. vehicles – to use Rogers’ cellular networks to provide equipped vehicles with a wireless connection. That, in turn, will allow Canadians using the system to turn their cars into living rooms on wheels.

Rogers, Canada’s largest wireless carrier with more than nine million subscribers, is eager to capitalize read as take more of your money, on Canadians’ desire for constant connectivity. Although some luxury vehicles come with some of these features, the introduction of Sprint Velocity will mark the beginning of a broader push to make the connected car as mainstream as power windows and air conditioning.

This scares the crap out of me, we already have distracted drivers that are texting, tweeting, (not to mention those doing their makeup while driving) and they want you to be able to have wifi in your car?

I can see it from a kids perspective, keeping them entertained and all, but otherwise to me it's a slippery slope.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......

I was just going to say...I've been thinking about this since when I first started seeing dash-mounted TVs available for cars...

Now we have something which requires interaction. Great!

Oh and I wonder how much Rogers will charge for the privilege?

Just another distraction for the mindless masses aka zombies/sheeple. Its already bad with cellphone zombies and its going to get worse.

Gees. Already have this going in my car, minus the actual internet portion, for a fraction of the price that Robbers and the auto industry will ding you for. My SqueezePlug Pi project: »sites.google.com/site/maycreates···eezeplug

Could most likely add internet access too, if I was rich enough (or silly enough) to pay the outrageous data fees and add it to my cell phone plan.

Kid's love the feature, and works nicely on my tablet using an DLNA client. Not for everyone, but fun project none-the-less.

Isn't this sort of redundant, with most people having a smartphone that can act as a wifi hotspot?

Waste of money.

@rogers.com

when will the safety board step and say enough is enough, of course Rogers and the likes see it as money in their pockets, got to keep reinventing it self with new products for you to play with and pay for. ,

I think so, especially in Canada where tethering is included at no extra cost. However I'm sure companies already make tonnes of money selling data-connected tablets and data plans to go with them that people don't really need (they could get wifi tablet and tether) and this will be no different.

Discard the LTE part, Wind is HSPA+ at best, not LTE.

So instead of using my existing cellular phone to provide wifi (or wired) internet access in a car (as a passenger), now I can pay money to get a device from Rogers that I can put in the car that does the exact same thing, except they'll charge me extra each month because I can't share my data plan between devices without paying more?

Brilliant!

This concept isn't even new. There have been cars shipping with this capability for at least a good 2 years if not more and they were not tied to Rogers either.

You're assuming how people want to use their devices.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the new flagship sedans from the German brands all require Internet connectivity. I know I sat in the new S Class a few months back and they all had blackberries hard wired in the arm rest, and it drives something on the display panel that pulls data off the net. While I wouldn't mind it being used for say, instant traffic updates on a gps in the dash, it can't be a good idea.

So does the Tesla Model S, although I don't believe you pay a monthly fee. It uses it for firmware updates, navigation, music playback, etc.

My truck came equipped with wifi service bulit-in. It's powered via cellular service but unfortunately only works in the USA at the moment - Dodge has stated that they do not know when Canada will be able to get the service as they are still working out a deal with a Canadian cell company.

isnt my onstar a sort of wireless to my vehicle. the gps was a onetime fee then i pay to update maps if i want to. the sirius is a sort of wirless im assuming. the wireless to a vehicle sounds sexy and i can see them making money off of it. but i think it should be dirt cheap but this is canada i can see them charging 35 or 40 bucks for it and bandwidth caps. all this so your kids can watch a movie in the backseat while in the vehicle. play punchbuggy !

So Rogers is teaming up with Sprint, an American conglomerate.

Weren't they campaigning alongside Bell and Telus about the unfairness of large American companies setting up a presence in Canada's telecom industry or is it fine only when they get to collude with said American conglomerate[s]?

I used an old laptop running Windows 7 to turn it into a Wifi hotspot (using 'netsh wlan start hostednetwork' command) in the car for a long car ride a couple of years ago to South Carolina. I loaded up all the kids videos/movies and shared them to their Ipod touch devices using a small lightweight httpd server (Mongoose). They were able to stream them all using Oplayer lite without converting to mp4.

I used a Canadian Tire 400 watt power inverter to power everything, and a Belkin Surge Protector with USB power outlets (»www.belkin.com/us/p/P-BZ103050-TVL) to power both the laptop and the 2 ipod touch devices.

I just purchased a D-Link DIR-505 to use on my next long drive with the kids. It allows for the external hdd to be plugged in directly and serves as both the Wifi hotspot and the DLNA server. I tested it in house and it works great using 8Player on the ipod touches.
