2 edits | How LucasArts Fell Apart »kotaku.com/how-lucasarts-fell-ap···01731043
A GREAT piece by Kotaku.
The TL:DR version is that management was so utterly incompetent, they destroyed both the reputation of goodwill LucasArt had AND they also killed creativity.
This piece has also confirmed what I always thought: Lucas art is a terrible director. All this man has is a creative imagination. The original trilogy, considered classics, had their scripts re-written almost entirely (by Lucas' ex-wife) and he didn't direct alone, nor had Lucas direct and complete control for the prequels.
He did for the sequels, and we all know how that turned out. Some of the worse dialog written for film appear in these movies.
Lucas and other incompetent managers ruined a company that was once respected on the same level as Bioware pre-EA acquisition, Bethesda, etc.
The good news is that crowdfunding has sort of bypassed these idiotic people by allowing fans to put money into the hands of devs who actually know what they're doing and talking about.
Can you imagine working on a game for two years, then have triple-chin-asshole Lucas walk in the building and declare we're scrubbing it all or we're changing the game so dramatically we need to make extensive changes in all departments, without ever consulting anyone?
Lucas is regarded as some visionary by so many clueless people. The original movies happened through a LOT of collaboration, whereas the new movies were 100% under Lucas' supervision, and I do mean 100%. If you watch the behind the scenes stuff on the DVD, you'll have plenty of proof.
Mark Hamill once said about all the criticism the movies received that it had no place because the movies turned out exactly like Lucas wanted. He said the series was his, the franchise was his, and every second of the sequels are as they are because this is how he imagined it, and people would have to find a way to deal with it.
Well, now LucasArt is dead and Disney has Star Wars in it hands. I bet if you told that to the legions of fans in 1983 when Jedi came out, they'd laugh their ass off. |

| She doesn't look tranny to me but I do wish them the best of luck with the marriage.
Personally him retiring and leaving the helm of the franchise to someone else is the best move he could have done.
So enjoy the billions Lucas and leave SW the fuck alone! |

I remember back in the day playing the classic games that were a blast to play. Star Wars X-Wing and Tie Fighter were two of my all time favorites. Then you have the early Jedi Knight games which were a blast. The last good game they came out with was Star Wars KOTOR. After that, things just started going downhill.
I am glad to see Lucas sell the Star Wars franchise to Disney. That was a great move. Now, we will see new Star Wars movies every year instead of having to wait years or never seeing any. I would love to see a Boba Fett movie too.
As for Lucasarts, I hope to see better quality games come out from them. As you said, they need to get rid of the crappy management and start over. They have a ton of games they could make, and I hope to see them rise from the ashes in the future.
This article just reaffirms my belief that you can have the best content, and still fail when it comes to making games if you don't have the right people. The Star Wars games used to sell themselves, and now they are a laughing stock. -- My domain - Nightfall.net |

Personally, I'd love to see a single player Star Wars game, based off the same type gameplay and open world setting like Batman Arkham City. Now that would be badass.
It'll probably never happen though. |

The Force Unleashed was a great game and, before it got shit-canned, 1313 looked to be incredible enough that people were actually thinking LucasArts' might be making a comeback. It even came out the other day that 1313 was going to star a young Boba Fett (not prequel young, but just starting as a bounty hunter young). -- From Psychonauts - Lungfish Civilian: (describing Goggalor) He's impervious to bullets! ... and love! -- |

 Micheline Chau, Franchise Killer |
Initially, the 1313 team wanted the game to be a GTA-esque game. The setting of the game is Coruscant, full of bounty hunters and crime families. Imagine GTA V, with the same mature direction, but in a Star Wars setting.
The team even planned how much it would cost to make such a game, and how many people, but the LucasArt executives thought it was too risky.
When you lack vision and don't want to take risks, that is how you become extinct. Adapt or die. Suits have studied all their lives to look at numbers and money and this is all they know to do. It's their only instinct. Money.
Apparently many employees have said Micheline Chau, who was CFO for years before she became president, is the responsible culprit for the demise of the company. She micromanaged what teams meeting Lucas could say and when they could say it. If you have a suit managing creativity, how can you ever meet the high expectations your predecessors have set by taking risks? |

I remember reading about this game and the pundits suspected it would be a mature game. While a GTA V style mature game in the Star Wars universe sounds great, I just don't see that happening. GTA V is clearly not a PG-13 related game. Star Wars has a brand to protect, and I wish they would lift that a bit to make it more mature, but it doesn't surprise me why they won't make it more mature.
Still, they could have made a GTA V style game without the maturity issue. That would have been awesome. Why the dork manager stepped in and at least didn't push to get this game done is shocking. -- My domain - Nightfall.net |

a Star Wars themed GTA style game, That would have been awesome if done right. And by done right I mean giving most if not all of the city planet to roam. I had thought 1313 was supposed to more in line with the Mass Effect game mechanics... although I guess it doesn't matter now. Such a game would have been pretty sweet.
Heck, we're still waiting to see SWTOR get meaningful space combat. I guess that will never happen. -- Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. |

The Lucas hate is strong with this one. Star Wars came from the mind of George Lucas. One of the greatest fantasy worlds ever. You're a hater. That's all. |

Great imagination, shitty director.
Neither of which have to do with the company LucasArts, and how it was managed.

as the article states, in the OP, Lucas didn't seem to understand how anything, other than a movie, was made. His constant reworks and lack of honesty in the people around him were the downfall of said company. |

So let me get this straight, the original trilogy, which everyone loved, and games such as x-wing vs tie fighter, jedi knight and such which people considered good shows that Lucas didn't know anything. The prequel such as much I didn't like was like the original trilogy, it was made for kids. The biggest thing with Star Wars is we all grew up and we wanted something more serious and Lucas was still making things for kids. |
