Server 2008 R2 as a Cloud service?

We have thoughts of trying to offer our shared network folders to our users via a cloud service that we control on our own server.
We'd like to have our users use a web browser to gain access. And then be prompted with a password screen where they would then use their AD user account creds to have access to the shares.

What is the easiest, quickest, and "free-est" way of doing this?
I'm no SQL guy so I'd rather keep that out of the picture if I can.

I've tried the VM version Owncloud and I got as far as opening up a browser and having the option to create an account but was then faced with the error of the MySQL username and/or pwd was invalid. And I never set one up nor was I prompted to. SO that error threw me off.

Any ideas on how to easily do this?

OwnCloud is the best for that. There are very detailed instructions on how to set it up under Windows.

Beware, you must use all 64-bit components to transfer more than 2GB files. IIS 7 has a hard limit of 4GB.

I've been looking for something like that but those limits are killing me.

Whats the cost on that though? With MS there's always a fee involved.
If I can remember correctly, that isn't a feature included in server 2008. And if it's the usual per license fee from MS. Then it's simply not worth doing for a non profit company such as us, when you have near to a thousand people who would need access to the shares.

If it's a monthly or even yearly fee, it's still not worth doing as well. Considering a VPN connection gets by just fine when compared to paying for something.

I couldn't find the detailed instructions you mention. Could ya link me to them?
Do you have any idea on how to set it up as an OVF Template in Vsphere? That way seem to be the friendlier way of doing it, although I can't quite figure it out.

I believe Oxygen Cloud can do this, but it's not cheap. »oxygencloud.com

I'm pretty sure you've asked this a couple of times now. What was wrong with using WebDAV on the shares? Or I guess a better question is, why the need to access network shares remotely without a VPN?

With out even looking at the link, that MS product is based on a subscription/monthly yearly fee. Or based on a number of licenses.
...correct?

We have mobile people. They're using Verizon USB modems. Those modems sometimes drop a connection, even if it's just for a second. Once that happens, their VPN connection is dropped. And so is their connection to the share.

Heck sometimes the VPN doesn't connect at all when using the connection through the USB Modem.

The VPN has simply been giving enough people enough trouble to justify looking into a different method of giving access to shares.

I'll check out oxygen cloud.

edit--Well after looking at it briefly (didn't have much time since I'm the only one in my department most of the time), I couldn't find pricing. And it seems like your things are stored on someone else's server. I'm looking to do it on our own servers that we already HAVE the folders on it. I simply want to be able to share the items via webpage.

The closest I got to doing this is with owncloud as a vm. But the MySQL error stops me from going any further. And their instructions don't help at that point. And, there are no instructions on their site that refer to that method of installing it. Everything I find is how to install it on a Windows server. And that's not how I was trying to do it.

Notice it talks about PHP x86, which will limit you to 2GB.

Jeeze that sounds even worse! Holy crap. We have a 24 hour business. That bill would be through the roof! Boy MS will think of any way to rip off it's consumers.

So you're saying it'll only allow for up to 2gb of storage?
