[XPHome] Clean Install on Toshiba Laptop

Hi All

Which way is best, find the product key with a product key finder, and use Retail XP home Disc to do clean install on Toshiba Laptop, Or use Recovery CD to do the fresh install, Problem is IE 8 keeps crashing, Avast keeps crashing, hard drive checks out fine with chkdsk, so think i'll just do clean install, and fix it up that way

Toshiba A105-S2101
120gb hard drive(upgraded)
1.5gbs of ram
at&t dsl 6mbs

Have you ever formatted this machine and reinstalled Windows before ?

IF you use the first method...not using the restore discs, then you should make sure that you go to the product support site for your machine and download any drivers that you may need first and stick them on a flash drive so that they are available after you install Windows. The main reason why you may not wish to use the restore discs for your computer is that all of the other junk that your computer came with will not get installed again. I have used both methods on laptops and computers that I have owned. Having the right product key is essential and it must match the operating system that is being installed. Also, bear in mind that as of April, 2014 Microsoft will no longer be supporting XP with any new critical updates, etc.

Yes I'm aware as of April, Microsoft no longer gonna be supporting XP, (ended up installing with Recovery discs, as This machine was formatted many many months ago, I don't know if it was a problem with Antivirus or corrupt files.

Had MSE in a while, removed MSE not long ago, put in Avast, IE 8 then kept crashing over and over as I opened it this morning, not sure what the real issue was, but decided since it was that bad, a clean install is worth it, been at least 12-18 months since I did one

Toshiba to some extent I have had install issues with the site drivers.
I've learnt from experience to copy off the drivers on the HDD if you are going to wipe it completely, or just keep using the factory restore.

The moment you get a Toshiba or any OEM create a set of back up disks. You can then use this to load the factory default again and you can access the drivers supplied with the machine rather than the support site.
If a set has already been created and lost, you still can create a second set but need to first boot off a usb or cd to delete hidden files that are created when the first set was made that blocks the copy process.

The support utilities on the computer itself will update any drivers that might have support fixes.

I take this approach to all OEM's that have a factory restore partition.
It just saves any conflicts with the support site drivers, because there has been too many from OEM's that support factory restore partitions that downloaded drivers never seemed to function correctly.

New Problem though, really slow, Windows update won't download anything, not sure if Avast related, hardware issue really or not, barely will respond. Worked fine when removing all the bloatware from Toshiba

Task Manger, No Menu, No process list, nothing
Is it infected? did Infection survive reformat?

do I have to be concerned with other household PC's now

Guess fixes up Desktops Security later, and ends using Windows Defender, and Puts in Avast on this one later, and do full scans with that and Malwarebytes.....Laptop running awfully slow, can't do nothing on it now...

Can you create another admin user to gain access to Task Manager?

This would be my first suggestion - net framework optimizer:
»blogs.msdn.com/b/dotnet/archive/···-up.aspx

You are not alone on the slow down, there has been a couple of posts about it here an I've seen it first hand a couple of times recently with fresh installed XP.

Osa.exe when Office was installed also created issues for me - stopping the service allowed me to do maintenance to gain the speed back.
IE, cleanup tool, defrag etc.

Created another admin user will try to gain access to task manager, as for the slow down, I guess will bare with it, and attempt to get it working again, Laptop only used for general emailing, and sometimes other things as well

If you can get task manager to work, I found once Office was installed, osa.exe continually running was a problem too.

Task Manager working, didn't have that file, svchost.exe was at 99 percent cpu, attempting to system restore back before installing Avast, and see if it performs better after that, if not i'll do a second restore, and try to fix it that way

Just wondering if you went ahead and did a clean install on the Toshiba laptop, or if the problems you are having are taking place prior to you doing that. It seems odd to me that things like task manager would be broken on a fresh install of the OS, even if that comes from a recovery cd provided by Toshiba.

Have you added a hosts' file at all and not disabled the dns service?

Also, go to an admin command prompt and type the following:
cd c:\
tasklist /svc

Then check against the task manager with the selection:
Processes|View|Select Columns|PID (Process Identifier)

This will let you know which svchost is at 99% and then show what services are affecting it.

Also a good document for svchost:

I’m working on an old Asus Z71v. Completed a clean install XP and I am having the same problem with svchost.exe (windows update) running at 99 percent. I tried all the ideas & fixes from Microsoft and searching Google. Good luck.

I can't understand why an O/S such as XP and the length of time it has been about suddenly there are a lot of topics on Windows/Microsoft Updates are not working correctly.

I agree. This laptop is for a client and I would like to see him to move on.

After I ran a copy of the recovery cd, laptops cd and DVD drive wont read original disc, did a delete partitionss and recovery method.
So far wont run windows update, slow at times, previously was running MSE for antivirus, reason did recovery, ie 8 kept crashing and such. Will stick to Avast now on Windows 8 Desktop

Tried All the fixes from Microsoft, Fixit's, reregistering dll's, even did a complete hard drive wipe, and redid the recover to original factory software--not much luck

I'm not sure how soon I can do it, but I do have a copy of Windows XP Pro with SP3 built-in, as well as a 2nd hard drive (80 GB EIDE) that I could install XP onto and test this out just to see how Windows Update works.

However, until I do that, here are a few notes about this topic.

1) To be clear, are you trying to run "Windows Update", or "Microsoft Update". By default (if my memory is correct), there is a shortcut for "Windows Update" on the start menu. Once you launch that, you can opt-in and install "Microsoft Update", which will create a 2nd shortcut on the start menu. So, just wanting to verify which version you are running.

2) As far as the actual download of said patches....I know on Windows 8, when I do my first check and select to install the needed patches, it takes anywhere between 20 and 30 minutes of doing something before it actually says it is downloading the first patch. I've not taken the time to research that further (looked at logs, router settings, etc), but I have sat and timed it to see how long it does take.

I don't recall XP taking that long (or longer), as it has been quite a bit since I did a clean install of XP. However, as I said at the beginning of this post, I do have the way to test it, but it could be a few days for me to find the time to do so.

If I do get a chance, I will test this out and make some notes of my first windows update process, and share them in this topic.

Tried both Windows Update and Microsoft Update

Even did a complete hard drive wipe (10 hours) and recovery again)

removed Mcafee in Safe more, ran removal tool in regular mode, restarted

got updates working a little bit after updating to IE 8, and Windows update Agent manually

Now Bits service is missing, can't get it back in so far
Keeps freezing
Chkdsk ran on the hard drive--errors found, (drive is old, like 2005 year)

might just be time to call that laptop dead, and just concentrate on my Windows 8 Desktop or save for a Microsoft Surface RT Replacement

Run HDTune Pro trial on this HDD and start a topic in the Hardware Help forum after doing a scan an posting smart results. No need to do anything else until that is complete and reviewed.
