| Weather! Here we go!
UNUSUAL SEPTEMBER WINDY AND VERY WET STORM SYSTEMS EXPECTED THIS WEEKEND TO IMPACT SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON...
A SERIES OF POTENT EARLY FALL STORMS WILL IMPACT THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST THROUGH THIS WEEKEND...BRINGING A PROLONGED PERIOD OF MODERATE TO VERY HEAVY RAINS TO THE SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON. TWO OF THESE STORMS WILL ALSO PRODUCE STRONG WINDS ALONG THE COAST AND LOCALLY INLAND AS WELL. THESE ARE HIGHLY UNUSUAL STORMS FOR SEPTEMBER AND HAVE THE POTENTIAL FOR PRODUCING RECORD RAINS.
THE FIRST BATCH OF RAIN HAS SPREAD ONSHORE INTO SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON THIS AFTERNOON...AND WILL CONTINUE INTO TONIGHT. BETWEEN 0.75 AND 2.00 INCHES OF RAIN WILL FALL BY DAYBREAK SATURDAY WITH HEAVIEST AMOUNTS OVER THE COAST RANGE AND SOUTHWEST SLOPES OF THE WASHINGTON CASCADES. THIS STORM WILL ALSO BRING BREEZY CONDITIONS TO THE AREA...BUT WILL BE THE WEAKEST STORM OF THIS SERIES.
THE NEXT STORM ON SATURDAY WILL BE CONSIDERABLY STRONGER AND WETTER...AND WILL CONTAIN TROPICAL MOISTURE FROM A FORMER WESTERN PACIFIC TYPHOON. RAIN WILL INCREASE DRAMATICALLY DURING THE DAY SATURDAY AND CONTINUE HEAVY AT TIMES THROUGH A GOOD PART OF SATURDAY NIGHT. HIGH WINDS WILL ALSO OCCUR ALONG THE COASTAL STRIP AND BEACHES...WITH BREEZY TO WINDY CONDITIONS INLAND INTO THE VALLEYS.
THE SECOND POTENTIALLY EVEN STRONGER STORM IS EXPECTED TO APPROACH SUNDAY AND MOVE THROUGH THE AREA SUNDAY NIGHT. THIS STORM WILL ALSO HAVE TROPICAL MOISTURE WITH IT AND MAY HAVE SOME OF THE REMNANT CIRCULATION OF THE FORMER TYPHOON IN IT. THIS STORM WILL BRING ANOTHER ROUND OF HEAVY RAIN TO SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT. EVEN STRONGER WINDS ARE POSSIBLE WITH THIS STORM...BOTH AT THE COAST AND INLAND.
RAINFALL ESTIMATES THROUGH MONDAY SHOW AMOUNTS IN THE COAST RANGE AND CASCADES COULD REACH 7 TO 10 INCHES...WITH 2 TO 4 INCHES IN THE VALLEYS. THESE RAINS WILL LIKELY LEAD TO AREAS OF URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOODING. LARGER RIVERS WILL LIKELY ALSO SEE SIGNIFICANT RISES.
THE COMBINATION OF HEAVY RAIN...SATURATED SOILS...STRONG WINDS...AND TREES WITH A FULL COMPLEMENT OF LEAVES WILL LIKELY LEAD TO TREE DAMAGE AND POWER DISRUPTIONS...ESPECIALLY AT THE COAST AND IN THE COAST RANGE BUT ALSO POSSIBLY IN THE INLAND VALLEYS BOTH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY.
THE STRONG WINDS AND EXPECTED HIGH SEAS WILL CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR MARINERS ALONG THE COAST. PEOPLE SHOULD ALSO AVOID BEACH AREAS WHERE THEY CAN BE WASHED AWAY BY THE HIGHER WAVES AND CAN BE SEVERELY INJURED OR KILLED BY DEBRIS TOSSED ONSHORE. -- ♬ Dragon of good fortune struggles with the trickster Fox ♬ |

This doesn't look normal even for October or November
According to a chart from the Portland office of the National Weather Service, the Forest Grove area could see up to 8 inches of rain from Friday through Monday evening. Matt Johnston, spokesman for Forest Grove Fire and Rescue, recommends taking extra precautions during the inclement weather. (»www.oregonlive.com/forest-grove/···est.html) -- ♬ Dragon of good fortune struggles with the trickster Fox ♬ |
|
 | But it doesn't look abnormal either; furthermore, pay attention to the wording: "could see up to 8 inches"
In any case, I've had a lake in my backyard twice in the last 5 - 6 years, and I remember that I-5 occasionally gets flooded around Centralia. The latter is one good yardstick of "lots of rain".
BTW, while it's raining steadily here, it's fairly light, so not a whole lot precipitation so far. Of course, YMMV. -- Wacky Races 2012! |

Yeah, I'm sure they're only making free sandbags available because we'll only get an inch or two
Giving away sandbags around here IS abnormal -- I'm not sure why you're so intent on downplaying information I'm passing on. 8" in a weekend IS abnormal for my town -- because it ISN'T normal. Either that, or you have a different definition of abnormal that isn't the opposite of normal -- ♬ Dragon of good fortune struggles with the trickster Fox ♬ |

You kids quiet down!
One problem, with global warming, the old normal is out the window. we will start seeing more rain early in fall before it's cold enough to stick and marginal temps to keep it up there when it does. places that used to be pretty wet will need those sand bags, and many places we used to sand bag will be unlivable. on the other hand the southwest and Rockies will likely wobble between dustbowl drought and excessive monsoons, but the only sure thing is increasing unpredictability, and events that while not catastrophic on their own will overwhelm the infrastructures we built that are NOW in the wrong places. I saw a map someplace that showed the effects of all the combined natural disasters on local populations and in the NW was by far the safest in north America over the long term, and that seem most likely to continue under GW, but safest doesn't always mean pleasant or plentiful, just survivable. |
|
 | reply to darcilicious They could've done a 'group buy' or a manufacturer's closeout on sandbags. Or they just want to make themselves lawsuit proof.
3 - 4 days of rain in the PNW during the fall is not abnormal, even though it may have arrived a little early and the "up to" amount seems a little on the high side. But what is the old saying? Trust but verify. I looked up the forecast on wunderground and tallied the rain amounts (see attached) and if I did the math right, the total is 4.6" (until Tuesday), not including whatever you may have had last night. With a current condition of "light rain, mist", it doesn't appear to be that a biblical flood is on tap. »classic.wunderground.com/cgi-bin···=WEATHER

We got records, too, as per: »www.komonews.com/weather/blogs/s···301.html
"Saturdays 1.25 inches also was a daily record for Sept. 28 in Portland. " vs. "Seattle recorded 1.71" of rain on Saturday, not only nearly doubling the daily rainfall record of 0.83" but setting an all-time record for wettest September day in Sea-Tac history, which goes back to 1948."
but the kicker is this: "Perhaps most impressively, a spotter near Potlatch in Mason County reported an estimated 7 inches of rain -- an estimate because that's all the gauge could hold and it overflowed." -- that's in a day, and it's more than the monthly totals of Portland or Hillsboro. -- Wacky Races 2012! |
