[Embarq] PK5001Z bridged vs non-bridged speed

Has anyone noticed their thruput impacted by using the PK5001Z in bridged mode vs non-bridged on the Centurylink network?
We used the 660 (bridged) for a long while. A few months ago we began having drops and outages. A tech put a 5001Z in its place. Eventually we configured it bridged and tried to use it but had some issues (with our connection and the tech, as they always do, suggest resetting the modem). Long story short we switched back to the 660 (for reliability and frankly, because I don't trust Centurylink accessing my modem).
Lately, our speed has been dropping (we once had 10Mb, had to drop to 6Mb, and now barely get 4Mb). In trying to determine if the 660 was bad I put the PK5001Z back into play. At first, it was non-bridged, a couple of days of test showed us reaching almost 5Mb.
When the next weekend rolled around, I dug in, set it up as bridged and reconfigured my router to be on duty. After this, our speeds had trouble reaching 4Mb. Investigating found that if either the 660 or 5001 are active and bridged, our speed is at most 4Mb. If the 5001 is NOT bridged, we can get almost 5Mb. This makes no sense to me.
Before I call their tech support, I thought I'd see if this audience had some insight.

What router are you using when the modem is bridged?
Are you testing with a wired or wireless connection?

Router is Netgear 3500 with ddwrt installed.
Wired and wireless did not make a difference. Network monitor is wired (does pings and ul/dl test twice an hour).
When PK5001Z is in non-bridged mode, it is DHCP server and Netgear is configured as a router with the PK5001Z as the gateway. PK5001Z is attached to Netgear lan port.
In bridged mode, Netgear is DHCP server and gateway for all traffic. PK5001Z is attached to the Netgear's Wan port.
